To be able to help him you must first educate yourself. Learn what addiction is, learn what enabling is, learn that this is his addiction and his problem. Learn that while the above is true, you can have a positive effect even when it appears nothing you do is getting through.
You can lessen the affect his addiction has on you by setting boundries. This helps both you and him in that he will have to accept that you will not participate in the drama that his addiction causes. This action by itself will give him a firm grounding that someone still has reality at hand.
Accept that you can not make him quit. That he may have to hit a bottom lower than any you can imagine, before he begins to seek help.
The addict needs to help themselves, doing it for them only enables them to continue or return to their addicted lives.
You can be there when he wants to talk, you can encourage him to seek help, you can remind him that he has other choices...that there is help.
NA distributes materials which are for the addicted. NA is an excellent resource for those seeking to overcome their addiction. It offers the support of others who have already walked this path.
I worked with addicts, their families and friends for over 4 years and the question you asked is the one I have been asked most often...how can I help?
The truest answer I can give is you can't. You can only encourage, continue to be a friend, offer information to the places that can help the most.
I am sorry your friend has fallen into addiction. Please tell him there is hope...there is help...when he is ready for it.

Excellent post! You hit some really key points and IMO the biggest one being that nobody can make someone quit..alot of times the user has to hit that rock bottom...I'm an addict myself and have been for many yrs HOWEVER I'm no longer a user (been clean for 4 rys now) but I'll always be an addict and it definately took for me to hit my personal rock bottom before I got it together...

I would suggest talking to them about rehab and maybe somehow checking them into a rehab center. I pray that ur friend will get better and good luck!
