I have a one year old blue pitt bull. His name is Smokie an he is a very loving dog. I wanted to start this to find out how people feel about these types of dogs. I have seen things on the news about how mean they are an how they will attack without any warning. Yes they can be mean if you make them that way. An the only way my boy will be on the attack is if someone is messing with me or my children. We raise him as one of us. He is apart of our family. He is loving an caring an very spoiled. So whats your thought about this dog. Here is a pic on mine.

They should be kept a real close eye on responsibly. I knew a small girl whose face was mauled by one.

My son had a pit bull that was nice and friendly too, but we were having him work on giving it away anyway. And sure enough the granddaughter happened to walk around near where his dish was and he did snap at her little face.

Any dog can be made vicious. It's a shame that we hardly ever hear about the Cocker Spaniels or other breeds that severely injure people. But let a pit do it and oh my goodness, the holier than thou people go up in arms and want to ban the breed. Anyways, I'll get off my soap box. I have a 10 year old red nose named Katie. She is 3 legged since July due to Septic Arthritis. She is a joy. I would love to have another. Katie is the same as your dog, she would be protective if someone was messing with us. I honestly worry more about my Chihuahua biting someone than my pit.

Exactly. People make a bigger deal out of pit bull attacks than any other kind of dog. I've known two pit bulls in my life, and both of them were the sweetest things. But I knew a retriever once who attacked anyone who came within twenty feet of it.

as much as i love most breeds of dog, there seems to be a certain few that may still attack without warning and it has nothing to do with how they were brought up...just something snaps in their heads.....yours is beautiful as are most animals but sometimes instinct wins out even if they have been spoiled and loved heaps
ive had friends who have said that someone they have known has had a 'dangerous' breed of dog that was never mistreated who just attacked one day...sad but true..

I think pit bulls have got a bad rap. It's only the vicious ones you hear about on the news. They never do a news story how many good ones there actually are. Pit bulls are like any other dor or cat for that matter if they are treated badly then will get vicious. If they are treated in a loving way they won't.

Your dog is adorable.
My cousin's pit is a big baby, but he can do damage.
Dogs turning mean is very unpredictable. Is your Smokie a full-blooded dog and did you get to see the parent dogs' papers? Sometimes greedy breeders inbreed animals to sell the pups. Often inbred dogs will turn mean.
But if you are raising your dog to be sweet and loving, then you should be fine.
People have had instances with chows hurting children too, but I have owned 5 chows. Only 2 of them acted interested in biting strangers, the same 2 that didn't like strange children...loved our kids, didn't like anyone else's. Weird.
Anyway, those types of animals take more care and more supervision. As long as you are taking that kind of care and nurture for Smokie, you should be fine. Just make sure he has his tag & shots and even the law can't give you a hard time unless he is running loose.

I absolutely love Pit Bulls. I think that they are the sweetest dogs. It's all about the stupid owners that get them & train them to be vicious/i.e. fight dogs! And those are the ones that have the reputation of attacking people!! Pit Bulls are the type of dogs that have had a long blood line of being used as weight pulling & fighting lines, so you really need to work harder with them than most dogs to not establish this behavior as they get older. There-for your chances of raising a good Pit Bull are a lot better. I actually used to know a guy who had two young kids and three Pit Bulls, and those dogs were the sweetist things :-). Also the media does not help their image at all, which is such a shame. Do some research and take a little time before giving Pit Bulls a bad rep.

P.S. Your dog is beautiful

I think your dog is really cute..Pitts get a bad reputation and a lot of people make them out to be mean..It is not the dog what is mean,it is the owner..they way it raises and treat the animal..is what makes it mean..We have a pittbull/lab mix,Sierra is the sweetest puppy you have ever seen..the kids sit on her, pull her tail..and so on.but she let them do it.Here is a pic of our little Sierra

I think they've been given a bad wrap by bad people who train and raise them to be aggressive. I've known many to be kind and gentle to both humans and children. It's sad that mankind has taken a race of dogs and created beasts. The even sadder part is that dogs who are rescued are rarely truly rescued because they've been tainted and aren't trustworthy anymore to be around other dogs or small children. Most of the time a rescued pit bull will end up being put to sleep. It's sad.

These DOGS need to be outlawed and are in some states, they are vicious and attack children, even killing some, just last week a child was killed by a pit bull our in city, owners cannot be held responsible for the meaness of an animal that is why we need to have these pets outlawed.

come on its not that bad. like others said they make a bigger deal then what it is. yes some pitts have done wrong but as you see as well they had no owners or they ran free like a street dog. not all pitts are harmful. my boy is so sweet an gentel. an loves to play with my children. it depends on the way you raise them. lets not give all pitts a bad name.

I've known some wonderful pits. I think they're great dogs; smart, loyal and very protective.
The trouble is with owners who don't socialize their dogs properly. And of course knowing how to take care of the breed. They aren't a dog I'd have with other animals in the house.

I don't like pitbulls, not because their agressivity (all dogs can be agressive as pitbull). I don't know why...maybe because they're ugly...

These breeds of dogs have an instinct for hunting and chasing. That is what makes them strong and very alert animals. These animals require very special care and training to avoid problems of the kind you read about. I would recommend shutzu training for such animals. Training alone is not enough. These kinds of dogs should be as much a part of the family as your children. If you give them that kind of love they will show it back. Also try to avoid buying these animals mature (you don't know how well they've been trained or how they were treated by the previous owners) you will get a lot farther by buying or adopting such breeds at a young age. The younger the better. The love should start from the moment you get them as pups and shutzu training has a range of training as these dogs reach certain ages. A lot of issues with these anmals arise from porrly trained animals that are neglected or inadequately cared for by the owners. When the dogs are part of the family and properly trained they will defend your family and will only attack on command (if you ever end up in an unfortunate situation of needing more than a loud growl and bark to defend). A properly trained dog like this will attack as trained to which is to immobilize rather than to maim (it's a defensive attack) the aggressor.

we do have a pitt bull too. His name is Oreo. He part of the family too. He is one year and 6 months old. He is a well behaved dog. People do tell us not to have pitt bull because they are dangerous. Any pet dog is dangerous once intimidated.

He is a very cute dog. I am a firm believer that any dog can be vicious. There is no way for a dog to let you know that he is having a bad day or just wants to be left alone without barking or biting. It's not like they talk. If you spend enough time with your dog, you will be able to gauge their moods and this will result in a closer bond for you both. I feel that a dog's behavior reflects their training and the people that raise them. So many people put labels on certain breeds and it's annoying due to the fact that Shitzu's can bite, Poodle's can bite, Doberman's can bite, Lab's can bite. It all depends on the way that they are raised. Good luck with yours.

I have a friend that has two and they are not mean dogs at all. People raise pit bulls and teach them to be attack dogs because they are really big and strong dogs. What you see on TV is cases where things have happened because a dog was mistreated or raised to be one of those attack dogs.

I happen to think they are cute from a distance. I have always been scared of them and I have tried to curb that fear but i cant. If its not a family pet then I wont go near them at all.
