I think it is associated with our need for instant gratification, our overall impatience, and a lot of poor parenting.

I think all the road rage that's been happening over the past years is warning sign of a lot of problems with Western culture.
Do they get road rage out on the farms (with one guy jumping off the tractor to beat up the fellow driving the harvester)? I think not. Well, maybe it depends whose farm we're dealing with.
The rat-race mindset of urban living, and the accompanying "life in the fast lane", is a perfect recipe for impatience and irrational fits of anger. Everyone lives in a constant state of low-level stress, but are compelled to repress their natural urge to let off steam. So it's no wonder that the boiler blows so often on the highways!
And "greed", as an expression of inordinate self-interest, can only serve to make the mix more volatile. So yes, greed probably has a lot to do with it - but it's probably just one aspect of a wider cultural dysfunction.
