While it is normal to get mad about the lack of a return call, you have to keep in mind that a pediatrician's office can become very hectic. The staff may have relayed the message to the doctor but he may have been called away on an emergency...after all, he IS a doctor. It is hard to know exactly what prevented you from hearing back.
When you don't hear back in two hours, call again! In the meantime, whenever you are really concerned, you can always use an urgent care facility. It will not be your doctor but it will be a well qualified doctor and will cost you the same or just slightly more than your office visit. The important thing is get have your child seen.
Unfortunately, croupy coughs often are worse at night so if he seems worse tonight or is running a fever over 100 degrees, do not hesitate to take him to the E.R. I hope your little boy feels much better very soon! (I'm an R.N.)

Zyrtec is usually ordered for allergies so, due to the long duration of your son's symptoms and no fever, your doctor must have suspected an allergy. The fact that he was not croupy until this morning makes me think that this symptom may be a new issue...not related to what he has been suffering for the past 3 weeks.
Also, it is possible to have asthma without hearing any audible wheezing. In mild asthma, a stethoscope is often needed to hear the wheezing. Sometimes, you might be able to hear it by resting your ear on the back of his chest.
I would definitely try to get into the doctor again tomorrow. If they don't return your call in 2 hours, call again. Good luck!

thanks the cough for the most part has been croupy through the 3 weeks, one moring it was so bad his eyes got tears in them, yeah they told me they suspected allergy or that since there was no fever and its been this long that they would try this to see if it is allergy , i did make an appointment with a allergists as well.I had to give him a breathing treatment the 2 nites before i took him back which was monday that i took him. he had respitory probl at birth he swallowd to much amniotic fluid during the c-section and was transferred put on oxygen i think he may of stopped breathing at the hospital as well before they tranferred him.Its good talking to you on her knowing u are a rn thanks alot

yes, this has happened to us before as well. We found that we just take them in as a walk in and they will get him in for a second to see a nurse practicioner if nothing else. Appointments don't work if your child is sick and just got sick. Just take them in and you will be able to see someone who is qualified to help.

Yes I would be a bit upset. It was unprofessianal on the part of the hospital. Ignoring or over looking things liek this can lead to more complications.

That would make me mad. I have had that happen too often so now I just badger them until they tell me whatever I need to know. I know a lot of girls who are nurses at these places and they say it gets really busy. I called to get my (almost) 2 year old in today for the same thing and they said they could not get her in until tomorrow. Well, if I had an earache and sore throat I would not want to wait. I ended up taking her to an urgent care center and she did indeed have an ear infection that needed antibiotics. The thing that makes me mad is this town only has about 2,000 people, and most of them go to the next larger city for a doctor, so you cant tell me they couldn't have got her in today. RRRRRRRR! These people have obviously never had that helpless feeling of walking the floor in the middle of the night with a crying sick baby, not knowing what you can do to help her. What did you end up doing with your little boy?
