Tattoos...

Canada
December 18, 2006 10:29pm CST
Why is it when I walk outside on a nice day, in a short sleeved shirt...and my tattoos showing, people always stop and stare? I mean its my body, I should be able to do whatever I want to it right? And also, why is it people seem to think that those with tattoos are lesser of a person or a parent, then they are? I know QUITE a few deadbeat parents who don't have tattoos...Just because I have tattoos does not mean I am any less a person than most out there. And my tattys are not scary to say the least. I have Lilo and Stitch, Uni and Simba on my arms. HOW is this scary and disgusting???

I'm sure some people check out the tattoos for different reasons. Some look because they think it is wrong, others might look because they are interested in the tattoos in a positive way. Tattoos are becoming pretty common place so people who are put off are probably getting far and few between. In the US, I'd imagine that most adults don't personally know another adult who has one, if they don't have one themselves. (I don't have one, but my wife has one and my brother has numerous. I'm still holding out because I'm too picky to settle on something permanent.) You do have to realize though that if you go out of your way to display an image (as in permanently marking it on yourself) and it is visible to everyone, people are going to react however they react. The attention can be annoying or maybe it can be affirming, but to assume that no one will notice or react is a far reach.

you don't have to think about what the others think of you...for you their oppinion doesn't have to matter..seriously..and as you said it's your body your skin ...your look...so do what you want..as same is with the pierceings...if you want to make one or two or even more it's your choice..because it's your body..kissez

It doesn't matter what you do, there are always people out there who will judge. I prefer to tell those buttnuggets to kiss my bootie. I, myself, have no tattoos but that doesn't mean I haven't thought of getting one. If I stare, it is only in quest of what you were thinking when you got the one you have. Usually there are reasons behind each tatoo. My son said he was thinking about getting one, and when neither his dad, nor me kicked up a fuss about it, I guess that ended the fun in getting it..lol. But he did get one, the Grim Reaper, it is nice. I told him it was nice, then he went and got another one. Can't think of what that one is, but he wanted it, he paid for it, so be it. It's your choice, you are an adult. There are too many goodie two shoes out there ready to condemn. Ugg I get so fed up with those types. Let's get them down and brand them!

I'll admit that I stare at peoples tattoos. But that is only because that I would like to see what kind of design that the person has, not because that I am disgusted by them. I also have 2 tattoos, a phoenix, and a custom design of my late sons initals with a cross in the center. On of my wifes friends husband has a few tattoos, and everytime that we see each other, and he has a new tattoo, he will usually show it off. And right now, I'm looking to get another tattoo to celebrate my 7 month old grandson. Any ideas?

I think generally a lot of people associate tattooes with things like "easy" "trashy," etc. They say that all stereotypes exist for a reason. WAIT. Don't yell at me. I personally don't think a tattoo has anything to do with a person's character or who they are, but YES, I do typically see people in the lower income bracket with tattoos as opposed to people that are more wealthy. I think that has a lot to do with societal expectaions, I don't really know. To each their own as far as I am concerned.

That's not the case. Tattoos are also assosciated with cartoon chARActers and hence liked by children. eg: mogly/dog/rat

tattoo - tattoo
i also dont understand why people with tatto always considered as bad or naughty, specially in the east country like mine.i love tattoo but my mom and mother-in-law didnt allow it.my husband just make a tattoo on his arm but he keep hiding it so his mom couldnt see.my suggestions is ignore them.if u feel comfort with it then ignore what people say or looked, as long as its doesnt harm others so dont worry about it:) btw...i love lilo & stich

Maybe the people staring just want to have a look. That's why you had tattoos isn't it? For people to look at? I personally think tattoos look horrible whatever they are but the ones you have got are obviously not scary. I know a lovely lady who has a tattoo of Tigger. While I still think it doesn't look very nice, it is by no means offensive. There is a difference between tattoos of cartton characters and having some huge tattoo of nothing or having your own name as a tattoo. Maybe people do think less of you because you have a tattoo. I mean, there are people who I don't think a lot of in the first place and the fact that they have tattoos makes me think even less of them but the kind of tattoos you have wouldn't make me think less of you, it might make me think you're a bit strange though! Maybe whoever startes at you is just wondering what your tats are or maybe wondering something else. Just because someone is staring doesn't automatically mean they are being critical.

I don't mean to be offensive, but honestly if I saw someone with cartoon characters on their body and they were proudly showing, I would stare only because I personally feel tattoos are for personal expression. What do you express with Lilo and Stitch, Uni and Simba? Except that you like cartoons. I think if they stare at you, stare back, it'll creep em out. Take joy in their discomfort, I do.

I have no tattoo but i have tried henna tattooes which were removable after 2 weeks. And I find henna tattooes attractive especially when I am at the beach. Well, people used to stare at people with tattooes because having one is associated with prisoners and ex-convicts, right? but hello? it's 21st century now, we are free to do whatever we want, even a whole body tattoo can do, as long as we're not hurting others.

I have a gift certificate for a tattoo and know exactly what I want (a fairy, natch). However, I'm a little hesitant about where to put it. Why? Cause I work in a business office and we deal with a lot of big-wig clients. The last thing I want is to present myself as a non-professional to anyone, but that is percisely what I'm sure will happen if my tattoo is visible.

Yes it's sometimes awkward when people stare at your body... It's your body and you can do whatever you want. But not all people look at you in same manner. Some look to appreciate the work of art... And I think most of them do look at the beauty.. It's never the tattoos that decides how a person is... Tatoos are just a way of expressing how you feel.. Am I right?

its just that people are themselves not so daring and when they see someone so daring they tend to stare even if secretly they admire.so its best to ignore such stares or comments.

It's a like or dislike mentality. Some people are harsh to other with tattoo's because of how they were raised religiously. Myself, I have 9 tattoo's, on is on the web of my left hand and I could care less if someone doesn't like it. It is a good conversation opener when meeting new people that are open to the tattoo culture.
