Should I?Shouldnt I have a second child if first child is 8 years old?

I really am in a confused state of mind. People keep telling me have a second kid.It will create company for my first one.My husband doesn't agree as he feels that we would be reducing what we can give our first kid not only money but time, quality treatment, caring,attentive attitude etc.He feels that I am doing wrong with my first kid by having another. Secondly, we both have noticed that the second child in most families is the notorious one,and I have seen many cases where something has gone wrong during pregnancy and the child or the mother suffers. So that breaks up the whole family.My first child is 8 years and I believe I am expecting.So should I listen to my husband or have a child?
