Guess what? 7 days before christmas the basement suite I am renting flooded really really bad, ruining everything including all the Christmas Gifts I had boughten for my loved ones! But it gets better, i tell them i want my damage deposit back so i can go look for a new place tomorrow, he says if you want to move you give me a months notice! I have knee deep water, no electricity or heat and he wants me to give notice, so of course, as you guys probably know me by now, I am not taken this crap, So i start talking about the damage to my things (it is their fault the place flooded they have been told they should replace the heating system six times in the last 2 years and never have) guess what he does, starts talking about my place being messy me being a slob and so on! of course it was messy my place was flooding I was packing everything out of the way, taking out all my cleanly washed clothes and blankets and using it to try, unsuccessfully, to stop the water from spreading, he then tells me I am such a dirty pig that I am to pack my stuff and be out tomorrow, no damage deposit or anything! Get this he also called the Police on me, and they showed up!!! Now I have been sitting here all night hearing them talk crap about me through the wall, i have been here for a year, if i am such a dirty disgusting pig then why do they keep me, oh and why in gods name would they invite me up to their house and get this they just asked me the other day if i would do daycare watching their grandchildren during the day!!!!I declined! If I am such an unfit person why would they ask me that?
So I am now homesless a week before Christmas!
So needless to say I am not sure when the next time I will be on here will be, I am staying with relatives for a while till i find a new place!
So I will miss you and promise i will be back, and to my certain friends, please stay out of trouble! :)

Wow, they can just kick you out? That's not legal in the US, at least where I have been. I'd see if you can find someone who offers free legal advice and see if there is any way you can argue for at least your damage deposit back. Those people ought to be ashamed of themselves.

yeah, did you sign a lease? certainly the lease would protect you from immediate eviction if he can make you provide a month's notice before leaving. is it a business you rent from or an individual. if it's a business, go to the Better Business Bureau first. if it's an individual, you might have to settle this in civil court. keep your cool in dealing with this, unfortunately the whole situation is probably going to be skewed against you.

I have no lease but it is still illegal in Canada to do that, and I could have refused to leave a lived there for 3 months rent free until baliff came to remove me, but due to the water there was no electricity as it would have electricuted me, and the heat was gone as it was a boiler, they would not fix it so i had no choice but to leave when they told me too

That is horrible! I would have taken pictures and called a lawyer. I lived in a townhouse a few years ago that was literally falling apart. All the townhouses had problems my row especially. The neighbor two doors down had a leak that spread two doors to either side of them and my cieling fell in over my dining room. I had a gaping hole in the cieling and you could see it had been bad for quite some time as the mold was all over the place and I have asthma. I took pictures when it became apparant they weren't going to fix it. I eventually moved and they tried to get me to pay a huge amount of money for rent (on the rest of my lease agreement) and damages. I threaghtend to take my pictures to the housing authority and I have not heard from them since.

I think that they started flinging accusations your way to try to cover their own behinds. I think that they not only owe you the damage deposit, but they also owe you for everything that was damaged of your property for not fixing the problem to begin with. I would check the contract/lease that you signed with them to see what it says.

I agree. Also, definitely get a lawyer, or say you have one. Usually that scares people. It tells them you're serious. This guy has no right to kick you out if he's been holding back on getting needed work done to this basement, and if he's never given any written warning to you that you're a slob, etc.

Been there done that before. I was living in a Basement of someone who was even a Christian family even, and they pretty much acted this way. Actually had it happen to me twice. It was not Good, and Yes, I have been homeless this time of yr. due to this. It is not a pretty picture, but we need to always remember God is in control. At least you have Relatives who will let you stay with them. Wishing you the best.

that is awful.I feel for you.this guy you rented from is a piece of work.he should not be able to treat you like that.he did not have grounds to throw you out on the street.that is just awful this man must not have a heart or a soul.especially to throw you out at christmas time especially when you did absolutly nothing wrong. He seems like a real jerk and he also seems like a slum lord.good luck on finding a new place.

i have been in the property management business for many years now. you need to go to your local rent board or your local housing authority, a lawyer would work as well. if you go to the right place you will get your deposit back. i dont think you will get anything for your things. that is what renters insurance is for. you might be able to get something from small claims court.

It's too bad that you haven't called the police first. But of course you must have a citizens' department. Why you don't make there your complains?

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, honestly if you wanted to you could probably call the BBB and other groups in your area about reporting the guy. But, to get your money back would involve hiring a lawyer and might be worth the money. Hope you have a good holiday though and things work out for you.

That is so terrible. I feel really sorry for you. I can't believe the insurance company acted that way. You could probably sue them.
