Considering the impact it had on revolutionizing the world I might have to go with the greatest invention, at least since 1000, is the movable type printing press by Gutenberg. Before his invention knowledge was controlled by the church, at least in what was left of the Western Roman Empire. This new printing press put knowledge to the masses and increased literacy rates. The discoveries, including the scientific revolution of the 16 and 17 hundreds, stems from that.
