Christmas seasons - time to exchange gifts OR to give away gifts to Needy / Poor

Every year we spend a lot on our Christmas gifts for our loved or dear ones. In what way this is different from other celebation days like Birthday, Anniversary, Father's day, Mother's day, Friendship day - I don't find it any different. If we really want to make it different, in my opinion we should offer gifts to Poors / Needy people who will always remember the occassion and bless you. I feel even the moral of Santa Clause storey also reveals the same.
