is it ok for babies to suck their thumbs?

my daughter is 1 year old now, and since she was about 2 months old, she must suck her thumb to go to sleep. Is it ok? Will it harm her teeth, mouth, or anything?

Some people say kids shouldn't do that because it might make their teeth crooked. Ever heard of the old method of putting something nasty, like pepper or castor oil, on the child's thumb? Ah, old-fashioned parenting!
In any case, you can probably give her a pacifier?
