She seems to be slightly bowlegged and I don't feel that she would produce the best quality puppies. I think for her safety, and to keep her from having disabled pups that I should go ahead and have her spayed. Hubby would be mad, but he doesn't love her like I do, he is thinking dollar signs. What do you all think?

I would have to side with you on this. Perhaps you could have your vet explain the risks and complications of breeding her to your husband, and the benefits of having her spayed. If the reasoning comes from an outside source, maybe he will have a better understanding on how you feel.

I would get her spayed. She's probably not show quality or she wouldn't have been sold, and due to all the health issues already in the breed, you don't want to bring more issues into play. A lot of breeders will actually make you sign that you will spay the dog you bought, not breed that dog. If the dog came from a good breeder and was fit for breeding, they'd have kept the dog or sold it for quite a bit more. You're smart to think beyond dollar signs. Not only are you thinking ahead about not causing problems for other people, but although about not causing health problems for your own dachshund.

A lot of times, breeders like that are referred to as "backyard breeders". Just someone with some dogs to breed and they generally breed them no matter what the problems are, often without screening, and usually breed too many times per year. A puppy mill would be a more large scale operation and involves several breeds (although, backyard breeders may also be breeding several breeds on their property). It is hard to find a good breeder for some breeds. It takes a lot of research and usually a dachshund from a good breeder would be about $800 to $1,000, not even show quality! But then a lot of backyard breeders charge about $600 so people think "hey, they must be good too, it's so expensive!". And they always brag about the AKC papers, which in reality only mean the dog is purebred. Nothing about it's health or the quality of puppies it could produce. It absolutely could cost you thousands, so good thing that argument brought it home for him.

That makes him a greedy puppymiller...she should not be bred due to congenital issues and I'd spay her ASAP
