This is something I have ALWAYS wanted to do! I went to Maine one year especially for this and when I arrived there was about 6 inches of snow on the ground. The day I went to the frozen lake to fish all the huts had been pulled because they said things were beginning to melt. They were not allowing anyone on the lake because of safety reasons. So I lost my chance.
I live in Mississippi, so to do something like this would be awesome.
Tell me your ice fishing stories.

I loved to ice fish growing up in montana. I used to catch a lot of different types of fish I would of never caught, because I did not own a boat. Also Ice fishing was a necessisty. We used that for a lot of food since we did not have not money.
Other than that it was still fun. Yes it can get cold, but a lot of place sell cheap ice shantes, that will suffiently keep you warm. I also enjoyed the people we met on the ice. There always seems to be plenty of people that will help out a green horn learn how to fish a lot better.
I do remember learning to fish for perch through the ice. These old guys actually gave a great hook to fish for them through the ice. It was called a swedish pimple. We were catching a few, so he would come over to our hole, and in a few seconds catch a fish out of the hole. He always said , I just hated to do that. Then he would laugh, and so would we. I learned a lot that day, and we brought some enjoyment to those old guys.

Wow. You sure sound like you had a lot of fun. After hearing your story, I might want to reconsider and try it one day.
Thanks for sharing those good memories.

I don't have any ice fishing stories either as I live in Sacramento, CA, but I had always worried how that worked, if it was up to the individual or if someone of authority made the decision to not allow people on the ice. I hope that you get another opportunity to ice fish. I love to fish and am lucky to live by so many wonderful rivers and lakes. I included a picture of the last fish I caught. Their catfish and I caught them were the Feather River and the Sacramento River come together. Thank you for this post.

I have watched people ice fishing on TV in the comfort of my own home. I have no desire to ice fish for two reasons. One I would be afraid of the frozen lake. I have heard one too many horror stories of the ice breaking and someone going into the lake and dying. The second reason is that I hate to be cold. I am okay as long as I am inside where it is warm but I don't like to be out in the cold.

I have been ice fishing twice in my life. I have always lived in Northern Wisconsin so I have had many, many oppertunities, but my parents are not fans of the cold or of fishing, so I never had the chance to go until my husband took me. I hate driving and walking on the ice though.

We go ice fishing every year and it is a total blast. I have never been cold during our expeditions, but we do dress warmly and I prefer to go on a sunny day. We have a great portable ice shack into which we put our small propane heater and our TV/VCR combo which we run off batteries. After the holes are drilled with the ice auger, the shack goes on top and we sit and watch the fish swim toward our lures. Oh, I forgot to tell you about the Aquavue - an underwater camera - that we take with us. We have video of fish biting, the hook being set, and the fish whisking away to the surface. It is great fun - I highly recommend ice fishing.
