Is it illegal in the U.S to not give someone a job because they are overweight?

I have been applying to a lot of jobs and they say that the job is really phyically demanding. Then they ask if I can handle it and I say yes. I have been in this field for about 6 years, but I haven't weighed so much. I just don't understand why they will not hire me. I'm thinking that I need to change my career which sucks, because I have to start all over again.

They will never say outright to you that you are overweight, or too old, or the wrong gender, but they will have these stereotypes. They just fail to hire you for some other reason, that they make up. It is illegal, generally, if you can prove it was the real reason. So what kind of a job have you been doing?

It's illegal but they will usually come up with another excuse not to hire you. I don't know if you necessarily need to change careers. All places probably won't feel that way. I use to work at a nursing home and most of the people that worked in the janitoral dept. were overweight.
