So my oldest is autistic. He is making huge strides thanks to his DAN! DR. but now he needs some help managing old behavioral problems that have become habits. The Dr. recomended ABA, but I don't know how to go about finding an ABA therapist. He said alot of the stuff could be done in home, but I don't know anything about it. Any Ideas?

My son Brian is now 7yrs old and has been receiving ABA since the age of 2yrs. It has really helped him become a more calmer person. He used to be very hyper, but as soon as ABA came to our home and now that he is getting it in school 3x's a day he is much more focused. I attribute his new found behavior to not only the ABA and the structure it gives but to the fact that I have recently rid my home of all toxic chemicals and gone organic. This is not to say that ABA is not hard in the beginning - it is but once he got used to the routine he looked forward to it. He is now in a center based program here in NY and is a very happy 2nd grader.

I am currently reading a book on ABA therapy, as the behavioral support person at my son's school used to work as an ABA therapist for many years.. and she fully supports it. I can tell you that most of what I have read about it is no different from the way both myself and my son's teachers already handle him. I'm sure more intense therapy could be beneficial, so I'm not knocking it. I just found that almost everything that I have read about ABA is no different from what we do every day here at home.
I would suggest going to your local public library and checking out this book: "Raising a Child with Autism: A Guide to Applied Behavior Analysis for Parents". By Shira Richman.
