How to store backups for a long time?

I have just learned that CDs and DVDs tend to lose data integrity after about 2-5years, and I have observed this on my own. So, what's the best way to store backups, so that I will still be able to use them 10-20 years from now?

The best option that I know of it backing up to an external hard drive. Tapes can be used for backups but they have the same issues as CD/DVDs do. Most people don't worry about having their backups longer than 2-5 years though.

Thank for the feedback, I was thinking of using an external hard drive, possibly something with solid-state memory, sinc those are very robust.

Well every 2-5 years you have to make another cd or DVD I see no other options available.

I'm upgrading from CD writer to DVD writer, I was told that DVDs live much longer than CDs but it may depend on the brand
