Abortion at 28 weeks?

I read recently that in the UK, women are allowed to terminate their pregnancies up to 28 weeks. As a mother whose children were born prematurely I am horrified to hear this. Both of my children were born having reached only the 25 week stage of gestation. When they were born they were perfectly formed. They had their fingers, toes, hair. They moved, cried. They were perfect babies.
I'm interested in hearing thoughts on this from others.

abortion at 28 weeks is only in exttreme cases and you couldn't just go and have an abortion if you decided that you didn't want it at 28 weeks.

I wonder what those extreme cases are smuggeridge. It would be nice if someone could enlighten me as I have only read about this and mightn't be getting the entire story.
Thanks for replying.

This is a very emotive subject. As a hospital scientist I agree with you, when the laws on termination were originally drawn up (late 1960's or early 1970's I think), premature babies seldom survived below 30 wks gestation, now with medical advancements babies at 24 weeks are now able to survive, although there is a much higher chance of some kind of abnormality at that age, although the majority are normal. However it has to be said that also at 24 weeks there are some babies who have no quality of life at all, and never will, causing greater heartbreak for their parents than if they did not survive.
While respecting that it is a women's right to chose to have a baby or not, I have always believed that abortion should never be used as a contraceptive, I could just about justify it for rape, and perhaps if there was a very great danger to the mother's life, where it would be very unlikely for the baby to survive as well.

I think that this iss a horribly inhumane way to do a human. They are also then left to die if they are at all viable. This horrifies me that someone can actually do this and still be able to walk the streets. This to me is a murder no matter how you look at it. The child is such an innocent victim in this.

I suppose you have a point Lil'mice. It's just a pity that some people would put a high social status above a high moral status.

I think what you need to understand is that some young girls, around my age have very strict parents, who are more than happy to kill off the new addition to their family so that they can pretend it never happened -- I mean, the sort of people that put social status above everything else.
London, being one of the most expensive places to live in the World, is a very daunting place to have to bring up a child alone, no matter how old you are, and just the threat of having no support can be enough to force a young person into an abortion.

I think that is horrible and almost murder. Geesh. I don't know how anyone could have an abortion to begin with and I definitely don't think they should allow it at 28 weeks!! And like eskimo said, I think abortion should only be allowed if you were raped (i personally would still have the child even if I was) or if the lives of the mother or child were in danger. I don't think that it should be done just because you don't want the baby. I hope that is the case here, and it's only done when in extreme cases.

It is horrible.. They do it here in Colorado as well. In Denver. Its just disgusting to even think about it. I am a mother of 6 soon to be 7 and I just cant even think of doing it it at anytime during my pregnancy. I respect a womans right to choose abortion, but NOT in the 2nd trimester. Thats just wrong in so many ways..

I agree. I find it hard to justify abortion, but hate to think about a fully developed baby being aborted......which is what happens if a 28 week old baby is aborted. Both my daughters were born at 25 weeks gestation. They cried, moved, felt pain, and were perfectly formed little babies.

I think the point has been missed that the ruling is not for standard terminations but for when there is good reasons involving major health concerns for mother and child. I do think it is a bit disturbing that it can happen at all, but the mother is going to have a tough enough time of they do this as they would probably still have to go through the birth without people getting at them that they are doing a really bad thing.

Common... I think you miss the point that a premature baby is capable of surving outside the whomb with 25 weeks!!! Overhere in the Netherlands, if you start have contractions and fall into labour with 25 weeks, they will do everything to keep the baby alive, because it has very good potentions to survive and to grow up as a healthy kid! Every week after the 25th week being in the whomb increases their survival changes more and more.. So, there is no necessary need to kill a premature baby like in these kinds of abortions, so It IS murder in the same degree like throwing a newborn with the garbage...

That is just awful! I could never image ever having or even thinking about haveing an abortion. But to know that a country is allowing women to do it tht late in pregnancy is ubsurd!!!! After you have carried the baby that long you would think that you would be emotionally attached. You only have 12 more week to be full term! OMG!!! I just can't imagine.

Well all I am saying that this wrong as then it is classed as Murder in my eyes
The Baby is developed and ready to live and this Life is being Killed so I do not understand why they are allowed to do it and even the Doctors are killing and they are suppose to save Lifes not Kill

I am pro-choice, but to get an abortion at 28 weeks is just unthinkable....to terminate at an early stage when the baby is just a foetus is one thing, but when it's fully formed and is capable of survival outside the womb, well i find it a bit disturbing.

I personally think that abortion is wrong, no matter how old the fetus is -- after all, you're still terminating someone's life for your own actions...However, I can see why someone may be forced into it, or whatever -- I can see why some people would HAVE to do it -- but this is just completely sick -- my friend had an abortion booked in for her 28th week, as the clinic was busy -- she gave birth a week before the appointment was scheduled -- she now has her gorgeous little baby, and she's glad that she never made the biggest mistake of her life.

Hi. I'm a mom of 3 young children. That is disgusting that they do that, there or anywhere. I personally think of the process as gross as I've heard it is, especially that late in the stage. Especially since I can still think back to what the baby ultrasounds all look like and 28 weeks?! omg they have detailed fingers, toes. Can I dare say, to me that's murder

I think it's a crime, but I heard also that in Spain 30 week old pregnancy's are aborted.. How can you take a way a child that you already feel moving around inside of you.. When you don't want to have a child or you don't want to be a mother, then a. why wait until you are this far pregnant, and b. with 28 or 30 weeks its only 10 or 12 to go befor birth, if you don't want the baby you can also list it for adoption, I think there are many couples who do want a child and cannot have one..

WOW!! thats NUTS! my youngest was born at 24 weeks and though it was a serious fight and he had numerous complications arise the first little bit of his life, he was a baby without a doubt..only one of his eyes was open and his voice was not quite "done" but he was a baby...At 28 weeks eh?! thats just wrong in my opinion...I'm all for abortion etc but that late in the game its not abortion anymore IMO

I find this completely discusting, the fetus is capable of survival. I don't understand why they just don't have adoption available in late stages.

Abortion at any age is murder. Every person, born or unborn, has a basic right to live. Life begins at conception and we need to respect an unborn child's basic right to live. Even a child born with a handicap can enjoy life and should be allowed to enjoy life to the fullest. The doctor who performs an abortion and the woman who has asked the doctor to kill her baby should be tried in court as murders, put in jail, and executed.
