Teenagers and Driving

Recently here in Las Vegas two teenagers were accused of causing an accident by racing. Their vehicle slammed into a truck which killed the 34 year old driver of the truck. The District Attorney made a decision to try the two teens as juveniles, claiming they didn't meet certain criteria set by the legislature and the courts to certify their being tried as adults. A petition directed toward getting the teens charged as adults was started by a co-worker of the victim. I think that these teens should be tried as adults. If you are old enough to obtain your drivers license, get behind the wheel of an automobile and follow the same rules of the road as drivers who are 18 and up, you are old enough to deal with the consequences of your stupid actions when you choose to disobey those rules. Do you think these teens should be tried as adults? Do you think the age to obtain a drivers license should be changed to 18?

No, I don't think they should change the age. Sixteen year olds are old enough to drive, and it's a big help to parents when their teens begin to drive on their own and can take themselves to all of the many activities kids participate in today. However, prior to granting them a license, the teens need to take a short class in what will happen to them legally if they break the traffic laws. The laws need to be tightened up and consistently administered.
Teens should be tried as adults on traffic offenses. Both the teen and his parents should have to sign an agreement that they understand the laws and realize what the penalties for breaking the law will be before a driver's license is issued until the teen is 18.

No, I don't think they should change the age. But the laws should decrease the minimum age of driving to 16. As at 16 children are much responsible that they can drive and follow the rules. And they also help their family in daily works if they learn driving. And if the topic is about the accident then it is not true that the accident was due to their underage, as adults can also have accidents.

The accident was due to their blatent disregard for others and the law. These were not five year olds behind the wheel of a car. These were seventeen year olds who knew better than to be racing down a city street. They should be tried as adults.

Try them as adults. I also believe most children aren't responsible enough to drive at 16. The age should be raised to 18.

I am with you on this. One of my relatives was killed by a drunk 17 years old driver. They should know the consequences for their actions. I am with the District Attorney. Driving is also a responsibility not just for fun... Teenagers out there who are very eager to learn should now this too so they will be more careful. And before getting the license they are educated with the rules of the roads... they know what their doing...

they should be educated and at the same time should be examined on the education provided for such accidents & their consequences before handing over thier licences.

I don't think the age should be changed. I do think they could change the program that would require them to drive so many months or hours on a permit before getting a license. In order to be a good driver it takes practice, and they just didn't get enough practice. I feel that they should be punished, like loose their license until 21 and pay fines.

Yes! I think they should be! They aleady get their driver license and that means they are fully qualified to take the any consequences of their behavior, otherwise, the government shouldn't allow them to obtain a driver license. I think they should be punished as a adult.

I dont think these teens should be tried as adults. Dont get me wrong - i think it was very irresponsible for them to be speeding and the loss of life is devastating. But these teens would not be able to survive prison if they were tried as adults. They should be given some form of equivalent punishment and their licenses should be suspended for 10 years. And I think it would be a very good idea to increase the age to 18 to get licenses as teens become more responsible at that age since they move to college and stuff.

This is certainly an issue for the lawmakers to think about. I believe that anyone who has a valid driver's license should be tried as an adult in any cases of vehicular manslaughter; if they have a valid license, that means that the state has determined that they know the rules, are capable of following them, and are aware of the consequences. In these cases, the kids are given adult responsibilities, and therefore should abide by the rules and suffer the adult consequences if they don't. If we are going to "let them off the hook" in cases like this, then why do we have a driver's license at all??? What about an 88 year old who gets into an accident because of age-related problems such as poor eyesight and diminished reflexes or alertness- if we're going to pardon teenagers, then one could argue for the "rights" of the elderly to be able to go out, drive, and not be responsible for their actions. Driving is a privilege, and a car is a weapon in the wrong hands. If the rules are not respected, the person has no right to drive, whether he is 16 or 90.

I don't think it's a matter of the age of driving. In the case you are talking about, the age of the driver had nothing to do with what happened - a 16 year old should be able to drive carefully and following the rules of the road.
If the accident had been an accident - a turn or something where it could have had something to do with them not being experienced drivers, then maybe some leniency would be acceptable. But they were using cars as toys, and that's just stupidity. I think they should be tried as adults.

these teens should be charged as adults.they killed someone by racing instead of obeying the laws of the road.i think kids under 18 who get their license should have to take a special driving coarse.i see alot of teenagers driving like they are in racecars i got my license at 17 and know i never drove like that.teens need to take and be more responcible when they drive and to have consideration for other people that are on the road.

No I don't think we should change the age limit for license. We can make some instructions or guidelines for the teenagers under 18 seperately so that they are cautious while driving.

i am so disgusted by how teenager drive. i was a teenager like two years ago, i was never a bad driver. i had my accidents here and there. but i was always responsible. teenagers nowadays are so disgusting in their impoliteness, selfishness, and incourteousness driving.
