What is the best way to start with Adwords?

Any one with experience of adwords out there? What is the best way to start? I am 1. scared to give out my credit card no.
2. afraid to run up a bill i can't afford!
I know you can limit your spending on adwords by an amount per day. But I am still scared to start.
