Thick fog at Heathrow has grounded flights due to take about 3 million Britons to a holiday in the sun over Christmas.
Have you ever gone abroad for Christmas?

I've always wondered what it would be like to go away for Christmas... I've never done it, not even to visit family since most of them have always been within an hour's drive from wherever I was living at the time. My husband's family lives quite far away and, since we've been married (3 years this coming January), we haven't been to visit them yet. I feel bad for him but he also doesn't seem to have much interest in leaving our area for the holidays. We really do love being in our own home with our kids, our tree, our presents... you know what I mean?
I've sometimes thought it would be great to forego all the headaches of Christmas shopping and put the money I would normally spend towards a trip. Seriously, the four of us could go somewhere nice for the amount that gets spent to fill up the floor space under that tree!!
My kids did go away on a cruise with my ex and his girlfriend a few years back, leaving the day after Christmas and coming home after New Year's. They had a great time, of course, but said they would have preferred to do such a trip with me and their step-dad. When I actually suggested the idea, then they told me that they still like getting Christmas presents and they would really miss that if we just went on a vacation instead. So I guess I have to wait until I can afford BOTH the trip AND the presents??? LOL
I do feel bad for all of those grounded at Heathrow. What a lousy start to their holiday! Hopefully, it won't be long until they're winging their way to the sun.
So, if you *could* or *did* decide to take a Christmas trip... where would be your dream destination?

Christmas in your own home IS lovely. It's when you have to visit inlaws etc that you start to have escape fantasies and think about just skipping the whole thing and going abroad.
If I went abroad, i think I'd go to Italy. That way, I'd still get a Christmas experience, as they take the Christmas spirit seriously, but I'd be away. Plus I think it's always nice to see how others celebrate Christmas.

The whole in-law thing is exhausting. This year, my husband's brother's in-laws are in town and he tried to get us to come along to dinner, because he thought it would make things easier!
I put my foot down - my husband's family were going to be at the meal too, and I always find dealing with them awkward, and the thought of dealing not only with my inlaws but my inlaw's inlaws was just too much!

LOL I hear you! I haven't had to do an "in-law" (or is it "out-law"??!) Christmas for quite a few years now and I don't envy those who have to jump around from house to house for the holidays. Sometimes, I wish I had a bigger family so I'd at least have a CHOICE about what to do, but most times I'm happy with just the few of us that share a meal together each Christmas Eve. For the first time this year, my sister is not having to eat two turkey dinners in a row as her in-law's moved their family gathering to the 23rd. She tells me that she can't wait to FINALLY spend a Christmas Day with just her husband and daughter, in the pyjamas if they feel like it, eating junk food and playing with presents and generally just enjoying each other. I really do think that's what Christmas should be about.
What a coincidence that you'd choose Italy... that's one of my dream trips right there. I'm in Canada and I don't know when in my life I'll make it to Europe but someday, for sure! I'm sure it must be even more fabulous at the holidays!

Not yet, I'd love to take my boys to Norway or somewhere to see the Real Santa but it's quite expensive.
I usually visit relatives for Christmas dinner, don't really want to but Shrek likes to spend the afternoon with his family so if I have to go they have to feed me.
I like to spend the day at home and let them all visit me but it's only happened once.

We visit family too over christmas. It would be lovely to just go abroad for a holiday over Christmas just for a change, but my mum would have a fit (she's keen on traditional christmases where the whole family gathers).
