I wish governments would spend money on creating programs that allowed their citizens to study abroad. I believe it would help bridge cultural gaps and reduce hatred or fear that comes from ignorance. I hope to be able to study abroad in the next two years.

Study abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. I went to Sevilla, Spain for 5 months during my junior year of college. I also went to Costa Rica for about 3 months after graduating from college. I was able to learn about another culture and myself.
I learned a lot about myself while I was there. I became more independent, less shy, and less concerned about what others thought. I was there for me, no one else. I was there to have fun and improve my Spanish and I didn't want anything to get in my way.
My friends and family could tell a difference when I got back. I was more confident. If I could have conversations, make travel arrangements, and talk to people I didn't know over the phone in Spanish, then of course I could do all of that with more ease in English.
I really enjoyed learning about the culture as well. It makes you aware that there is so much else out there and so many other ways of doing things. I feel I really became an open-minded person.
I also feel that this experience helped me in the work force. I am able to work well with people of different backgrounds and cultures and I am open to new experiences. I have seen that there is not just one right way to accomplish a task.

It's a great way to know different cultures, different peoples and different places, it's much more better than tourism as you get to spend a lot of time in the country and know more people, being a tourist you usually don't spend more than 2 weeks in one country and miss out on a lot of things, you can't go everywhere, don't have time to know the nice people you run into, etc.. I wish I had the chance to study abroad, I would still do it if I get the chance :)

I think studying abroad is only a waste of time if one is a miserable person who is never satisfied, other than that it is great idea. It is the best education in life I have received. It helps you better understand the world and your own culture. It could help you learn more languages, depending on your goals and your country. It looks great on a resume. Employers want to hire people who enjoy and can handle being around different types of people, a person who can negotiate identity and can handle being put in a different and not always comfortable postion. I belive there are mistakes and you learn from them but there is no such thing as a waste of time. I gain something from every experience. When an experience is mostly bad, i learn how to avoid it the next time around and I can help others avoid it all together.

I have moved to canada as an immigrant from india, three year back, the main reason is to study in canada and work there, since i found that canadian degrees are recognized world over, and competition is compartively less, and more job opportunities.
