Break ups are never easy. Confusion, humiliation and anger--no wonder break ups are one of the most common subjects of songs in popular culture. Some are written in angst, some in resignation and even some in humor. What is your favorite break up song?

Can we post lyrics here? I'm not entirely sure. But I'm compelled to paste the lyrics for Do What You Have to Do (see previous post). What's the worst that can happen? They can delete this post, right? Do What You Have to Do Sarah McLachlan What ravages of spirit Conjured this temptuous rage Created you a monster Broken by the rules of love And fate has led you through it You do what you have to do And fate has led you through it You do what you have to do ... And I have the sense to recognize that I don’t know how to let you go Every moment marked With apparitions of your soul I’m ever swiftly moving Trying to escape this desire The yearning to be near you I do what I have to do The yearning to be near you I do what I have to do But I have the sense to recognize That I don’t know how To let you go I don’t know how To let you go A glowing ember Burning hot Burning slow Deep within I’m shaken by the violence Of existing for only you I know I can’t be with you I do what I have to do I know I can’t be with you I do what I have to do And I have sense to recognize but I don’t know how to let you go I don’t know how to let you go

Sarah McLachlan has always been a sublime lyricist. She has proven that in her album Surfacing, especially in the song "Do What You Have To Do". And what's interesting is that aside from being a devastating break up song, "Do What You Have To Do" can also be a subtle exploration of obsessive, unrequited affection.

its "goodbye my lover" by james blunt because the breakup is for eternity

Indeed, James Blunt seems to have a nifty talent for writing great songs. Speaking of eternity, I'm reminded of Queen's "Who Wants To Live Forever?" Not exactly a break-up song but a forlorn ditty nonetheless.

One real old one that I always liked was 'Bell Bottom Blues' by Derek & the Dominoes (Eric Clapton). The wailing guitar parts perfectly suited the lyrics and at times sounding like crying.

I would agree. Eric Clapton's work (both as a lead guitar player for numerous bands and as a solo artist) has always been incredibly diverse and when it comes to expressing the blues through the guitar, Clapton remains on top of the list. For guitar aficionados, wailing guitar parts have been used to great effect in break-up songs (Joe Satriani's "Cryin'", GNR's "November Rain"). But "Bell Bottom Blues" remains an immortal classic.

For a long term relationship that ends I love Gladys Knight and the Pips- Neither one of us. This song has you in floods, the words are so true!! or for a short term Ray Charles- Hit the road Jack.

Ray Charles' "Hit The Road, Jack" is alternately breezy and bruising. The work of a true genius.

Hey, I heard that one. Cool song from a cool band. You've got good taste in music. I also love Coldplay's "In My Place". Heart-breaking break up song.

Sarah McLachlan's Do What You Have to Do. The melody is haunting and the words are poignant. I cried bucketloads while listening to this song way back in college. Don't ask. It's a long story. lol.
