Does anyone own a small town bookstore or know of one?

I live in a small town but we have Barnes & Nobles, Borders, etc. in the next city over. I have such a love of reading and our town does not have a bookstore so I've been seriously thinking about opening a small bookstore with a homecooking type cafe. Do you think this is too much like the bigger stores?

Hi! I don't own a bookstore, but I think your idea is wonderful. I am thinking of starting my own online publishing company, which is why I responded to your post, and I have been trying to think of ways to make it more personal and friendly, too. I think people would love to be able to buy their favorite magazine or newspaper or new romance novel and enjoy it over a home-cooked lunch. I know I would! Best of success to you!

Thanks so much for your response! Sometimes it is so hard to figure out what will work and what won't. People are so picky and choosey. Your idea sounds very interesting. What would your site offer? I'm in the process of writing a novel/novella, maybe I can be your first customer!

ummm ok, thanks? Oh wait, are you one of the ones I've been hearing about that just leave a couple of word comments for their own benefit?

I know of one. Actually, I know several. One of my secret fantasies is to own a bookstore which I would call Books Not By White, Heterosexual, or Able-bodied Men and the store would contain only books not by those people. That, alas, is probably not going to happen. For myself, I try to shop at independent bookstores whenever possible. However, at times I'm guilty (as everyone is) of going to a Barnes and Noble or Borders.

My aunt and uncle own Lee Booksellers out of Lincoln Nebraska. They started over 25 years ago with just a little place in a mall. Now they have 3 or 4 locations and do a booming business in spite of the chains. It all depends on how much effort you put into it, and the clientele that you can attract. When I was little, there was a little tiny, hole in the wall, mystery book store that did a fantastic business in this one little town. The owner liked mysteries, and specialized in them. Had anything you could possibly imagine, new and used. Had great activities and special events. Wonderful little place.
