I sometimes I wonder why some sellers put reserve not met on an item but then never accept the starting price you give them. None of my regular sellers do it but some do. I feel as if you should just put the starting bid you want up there and go form there. Have you ever experienced that with a seller please explain...

Hi! There is a reason for using a reserve price. A reserve price is used when an item is very valuable or very expensive. It protects the seller by allowing him/her to set the least amount of money he/she will accept for the item. For example, say the seller is selling a rare painting worth $500 to $600. He won't want to start the bidding low and accept a low price for this. So, he/she might set a reserve price at $450, or the least amount of money he/she would accept for the painting. If the bidding doesn't reach $450, then the seller doesn't have to sell the painting because he/she didn't get the asking price. The reserve price option is there to protect sellers. Does that make sense?

Hi There! I sell on eBay and I'd rather not use reserves but the way things are it's necessary to protect the investment. I'd still rather just start the item higher but people seem to want an auction and a high starting price can really scare buyers off...I sometimes think buyers need the satisfaction of knowing other people want the item even if it means auction fever can drive it up higher than the seller would have taken in the first place.

another way for ebay to make money
they charge to put a reserve price on and just to lower the cost of a listing ebayers put the starting price lower
as the higher the starting price you have the more it costs you to put up a sales listing

I use ebay to sell all the time and I put reserves on my listings because I don't want to let it go for a cheap price. But at the same time it's good that no one can see the reserve because people sometimes bid way over the reserve.
