my favourite movie too...
so i did a little research and came up with this question that were ask to Drew Barrymore
Q.What is the point of the chinese girl? I've watched the film and can't quite figure out what she does with the plot, especially when Donnie grabs her face and says "Everything will be better for you".?
A. Throughout the film, themes of alienation and disillusionment are prominent - an illustration of the alternate universe plotline. Cherita is that theme manifested in a very visible sense - people make fun of her, reject her, and she obviously doesn't fit in.

From a psychoanalytic viewpoint maybe she represents Donnie's Anima, his female side. This is just my guess, it's interesting that you ask this question I was wondering the same since I will be working on a research paper on this film

I think the whole movie just tries to point out things in society. The movie itself doesnt have an exact point its trying to prove, but its representation of america in some senses is correct and is interesting for us to watch.

yes, in a sense you are right. But the film can also be analyzed from many different viewpoints. It is more meaningful and powerful when you actually take the time to analyze the characters and their actions from a certain viewpoint. there is more depth this way. its great to watch films for entertainment, but on a more profound level it is important that we analyze them

Cherita is what everyone is scared of being; the one that doesn't fit in, doesn't belong.
