volunteer v.s. paid work

so im stuck in limbo between the two options of volunteering for a zoo or humane society and working for something along those lines. i think ive finally decided that i do want to work with animals as a job, it would be fitting, but i really need money right now. in order to get a good job with the county or just with a vets office in general i have to have some volunteer hours in my resume and that's so hard to do when im strapped for money. i guess what im lookin for is suggestions on what to do...go ahead and volunteer as much as i can so to open doors for the future or should i just work for money right now and worry about a solid career later in life?
