someday i would like to get a pair of gliders, how are they with cats..or..how are cats with them? are they easy to manage, i've taken care of a lot of wild, injured animals and i kind of think of it to be on the difficulty level of something like that.. i've heard it explained as taking care of a toddler? well, please respond with any words of wisdom.

I don't generally recommend gliders to many people. They are cool little creatures, but they are so much work. Cats and gliders shouldn't play together -- but as long as you keep them separate it would be okay. You have to spend lots of time with them. You have to carry them around in a pouch all day around your neck so they bond to you. They are nocturnal..so they are up all night, and not at all during the day. Their diet is very specific -- one little mess up and they can/will die. They aren't littertrained either. They are very easy to lose do to their size. Their teeth are razor sharp, and they crab (scary noise!) at you when upset. Not knocking them - just saying they definately are not for everyone.

i think i might just be the right kind of person from it. im the only person (i know of) in the history of the world who has raised a retarded squirrel and a dying sparrow into viability.. oh that sounded concieted hahah.. ANYWAY. i think i'd really enjoy a glider. losing one would kill me though

There is a newsletter at www.sugar-gliders.com/sugar-glider-newsletters.htm They give you an insight to what they are like. From what I have read about these cute little creatures, they seem like a hard job. Not anything like injured wild animals, but yes like a toddler LOL. It would be interesting to actually see one around. If you started raising them to sell, you could make a lot of money. It takes a lot of patience to raise them.

I had a friend that used to breed them. They are the cutest things. Whenever he brought them out, people would instantly fall in love with them. He would always share with people how difficult they are to care for. Cats are definitely not a good companion for them. Sugar gliders can be very affectionate. They will bond closely with you. They like to go everywhere with you and just be close to you. My friend told me that you can toilet train them enough that his would not go on him, but if they happened to be on someone else, then they might. I thought that was kind of funny!

I don't think I've ever heard gliders compared to toddlers before... maybe a toddler with razor sharp claws :) We have two gliders, Ichabod and Malachi, and we're getting a third in a week or two. I would definitely agree that they're not for everyone, though. As much as I love the boys, they can definitely be a mess and a pain in the butt. Some gliders bond more quickly than others; our guys seem to like us pretty well once they're out of the cage, but actually getting them out can be a chore if they're not in the mood.
