What is the best Id Software FPS?

The best part of Quake 4, for me anyway, lies in the fact that the devs wasted almost no time before the mayhem and action ensues. Most FPS games have to establish their story first, like Halflife 2 and Doom 3. Whereas Quake 4 is a straight continuation of its predecessor there is no need to build up a plot-line, and to be quite honest the characters are slightly forgettable. The series has always been about stopping the Strogg from ever taking over Earth, and with their main defense cannon finally being destroyed; the marines can push for the final assault on the Strogg planet.
