In general, yes. Unless you are given an anesthetic or analgesic. And it also depends on what kind of abortion, how advanced the pregnancy is.

I have read that abortions can hurt. I would think it would hurt most afterwards and probably depends how far along you are, too. The emotional pain is what I think would be the worst.

Yes I had one when I was younger and I was awake I was so scared I couldn't move but in my mind I was screaming I can feel that can't you see I can feel what you are doing,I didn't do it again. It has stayed with me after all this time and I still feel the pain.

When I had my abortion they put me completely under so I didnt feel a thing and if I'm not mistaken thats standard procedure...same with getting a D&C after miscarriage, they put me completely out..so no in my experience and the experience of ppl I know who've also had them, they dont hurt physically...

I think it depends...now that RU486 is available ( the abortion pill used for what is commonly referred to as a "chemical abortion"), there can be very little pain involved. You can only have that done up to about six weeks of pregnancy.
You pay extra for anesthesia with many clinics, and if you're in pain during the procedure, I'm certain you could ask for the dosage to be increased.
Some women feel no emotional pain, either. It's just an enormous relief to have the procedure completed. My sister was sent home with a prescription for Vicodin after her 2nd trimester abortion, and her pain was easily managed. It just depends on so many varying factors, it's difficult to make a "blanket" statement to cover all the factors.
