I am absolutely weak for good soul food. I can make a fried cabbage so rich that you have to pause and salivate between bites.
But I know I can't eat like this everyday, and stay healthy. So I am conscious about going easy on the seasonings for everday cooking.
I would love suggestions or recipes for healthy dishes that still have the "soul" food kick!

Keep your same recipes and just make a few minor adjustments. Try sautéing your cabbage instead of frying. You will find you need less oil without compromising the flavor. Try smoked turkey wings instead of ham hocks in your greens. Other seasonings that work well are chicken broth and Lipton onion soup. When the recipe calls for butter, use one part butter and three parts “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter.” This still gives you the taste of butter.
When the recipe calls for sugar, use half sugar and half Splenda. There’s something about sugar that you can’t beat. If the recipe calls for milk, use fat-free milk.
With these minor adjustments, no one will notice. After all, you will still have the onions, peppers, garlic, spices, etc. right? Good luck.

There's lots of ways to have healthy soul food! Oven fry instead of deep frying! Use olive oil instead of lard. Its not the seasonings, per se, but fats. Soul food, modified slightly, is actually really healthy! Greens are good! Potliker is good! Cut back on sugars and fats and frying.
