Why attorney's fee is so expensive?

Many people who have been victims of different crimes are hesitant to fight for their rights. It's because they do not know who might help them. Of course the first thing that will come to their minds is to get an attorney.
But what if you are just a poor person. It's very difficult to get a lawyer who will defend you.
And if you decided to get a public attorney, you are not even sure if that lawyer is good. Because they say a good lawyer = cash. I am not sure if it's true. I just heard it from one of my friends who is in a law school.
Kindly give your insights about this matter. I am thinking if we could be given rights to defend ourselves in court instead of getting a lawyer to fight for us. Because lawyers are expensive in the first place.

Is there a law that allows an individual to defend himself in the court if he knows the law? Thank you for your response!
