Which is worse, if any, Alcohol or Hard Drugs?

Having been homeless for a while recently, (Alcohol and a messed up family, which came first, the chicken or the egg?)I met plenty of people strung out on either alcohol and/or hard drugs. I stayed in shelters where groups of 'substance' abusers were thrown together, the thing that struck me a strange was that alcoholics look down on hard drug users, as if they are somehow inferior to themselves, they would insult a heroin user or a weed smoker even, to the point of calling them 'lowlifes' is alcohol that socially acceptable?
