The Indian batting since the mid-1990 is dependent to a big extent on this classically correct right hander from Bangalore. His superb technique against both pace and spin, patience for the longer version of the game and competitiveness have helped him amass runs all over the world in Tests. Though considered a bit slow in scoring runs in ODIs his value to the team in the shortened format of the game too is inmense. Nicknamed ‘The Wall’ for his unflappable temperament. Made his Test debut against England at Lord’s in 1996 after representing the country in a ODI for the first time against Sri Lanka in the Singer Cup at Singapore in 1995-96. Has a career Test average of plus 50, hallmark of a great batsman.
