I was brought up in an era where spanking was a daily activity for my Mother. I said if I ever had children I would find other ways for punishment. My generation is the one to blame for the way kids are today. I did not spank my child daily it was very few times in his life, but I promise you he knew if it got to that point I meant business. I think you can do both and still teach your child respect. The one punishment he hated the most was standing in the corner, which was also not used very much. You need a lot of different ways to get through to a child, but using the rod is not always the answer!

to me, using the rod gives a child a few very dubious ideas. 1 It makes the child think its ok to hit someone as long as they are smaller than you and without power. 2 The child thinks violence is normal as long as you are a grown up 3 it implies that you can enforce your ideas on someone else 4 i think it probably constitutes child abuse 5 the worst excesses of human being over the last century have been carried out by adults who were routinly beaten as a child, i think these points are enough for us to ban parental violence against children, dont you
