How do I know how many postage stamps to use?

Is there a guide or way to find out how many postage stamps you should put on a package? Like ebay for instance, you'v got an Item, but you dont know until the end of the bid where you have to ship it. it could be in your state, or across the whole country. how do you know wat to put for shipping costs? ugh!
