why muslim women are required to wear scarfs/veil to cover their head?

i still dont understand if u wear, ur being modest if not, that makes u immodest? must u wear it eventho u dont understand the purpose of wearing it?

muslim women wear theirs out of respect. respect for their religion, respect for their husbands. respect for the other men in their society.....

My understanding is that its a way to express modesty. The same way orthodox Jewish women must wear skirts down to their ankles and long sleeve shirts.

so is it required in islam? isnt modesty from within? how bout those that dont wear? arent they modest?

Veil identifies the woman as a Muslim, yet it is not just a symbol or tradition or modesty. Allah said in the Qur'an: "...so that they would be distinguished and not molested. And God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful".(Qur'an, 33:59)
