Okay I admit it,I am a telemarketer. It is a bad job but it pays pretty good and it pays my bills. Before I get to my question let me clarify some things,I don't call you back unless you tell me to,I don't leave messages, and I do know how to take no for an answer so I don't badger anybody.
So why are people still so mean to me when I call?
I can take being hung up on but why scream and cuss at me? Just wanting some opinions here, thank you.

I have to agree there is no need for that
I say no thank you and a couple of times the Person ignored me and carried on and tried to tell me I did not know what I was missing so I just put the Phone down I would not shout and scream at someone
But you get some People that are so fed up with the calls and they might have had a few that Day or there are just the rude ones that think it is big to shout at some poor Person that is only doing their Job

Thank You for being nice too. I don't mean to bug people. And I don't see the point in arguing. If you don't buy anything someone else will. Why waste time when you could be talking to someone who really is interested. Thanks for your comment.

Unfortunately that's just the way it is. People automatically get defensive because the first thing they think of is "this person on the phone is trying to sell me something". I know, I do it too.
I also know what it is like to be in sales as I was a life insurance rep and man, did that suck. I hate everything about sales and fortunately for me, I found a place where we only deal with people who are wanting to be dealt with and a product people have to have because it's the law. Half the battle is won and there is no "pounding of the pavement".
Unfortunately this is something you're going to have to accept. The best thing for you to do is try and embrace it is going to happen, and maybe it won't be so bad when it does because you are already expecting it.

No problem. The one thing I did like is, it showed me where I belong in my career and sales is not it. It also taught me the "dark" side of sales and what it is all about.
They sugar coat sales (especially recruiter) about all the money you can make blah, blah, blah but forget to tell you the other side of things.
You'll take a lot out of your experience. You seem to be mature in how you are handling it. When you find your career, you'll be happy because it probably won't be as stressful as what you are doing now.
Good luck!

I have had them call and I have been in Bed asleep and they call trying to sell something. or they call when it is dinner time. That irks me.
dont call when people are in bed and yes I do know that is a tough one. people do goto bed a differnt times. Also I dont want to talk when I am eating I am usually hungry, when they call.
what irks me the most is that when I say I am not interisted they keep going. instead of saying ok thank you. and hang up. I dont yell.
I dont get calls from telamarketers anymore unless it is like verizon, or direct TV which I subscribe to Direct TV and Verizon is my phone carrier.
I dont yell though

Thank You for being nice. It is hard not catching people at bad times though. I have a rule that if it is past 7:30 i don't call my time zone. I'm Eastern Standard. Even though not a lot of adults go to bed at that time a lot of their kids do. Thank You!

I try to be polite to people unless they are pushy. I realize that you are just trying to make a living like everyone else. I think sometimes its just a bad time when the calls come and if someone is having a bad day it's easy to take it out on the telemarketer.

i was also a telemarketer so i know how you feel. i think it is because alot of times people have a phone to talk to friends, family, people they KNOW and when they answer and it is someone basically trying to get their money, they get mad. another thing...where i worked we had to push 3 times at least...keep trying keep trying..because we had higher ups listening in on us and if we did not push our sale we got in trouble. alot of people do not understand that WE, the telemarketer get in trouble for not trying to push a sale. people just find it as an intrusion into their lives basically. it is like the telemarketer is coming into a person's home, while they are eating, spending time with the family, sleeping and bugging them. I mean can you imagine if someone did that in REAL LIFE instead of over the phone?

Telemarketing may be done from a company office, from a call centre, or from home. It may involve either a live operator or a recorded message, in which case it is known as "automated telemarketing" or "robocalling."
An effective telemarketing process often involve two or more calls. The first call (or series of calls) determines the customer’s needs. The final call (or series of calls) motivates the customer to make a purchase.
Prospective customers are identified by various means, including past purchase history, previous requests for information, credit limit, competition entry forms, and application forms. Names may also be purchased from another company's consumer database or obtained from a telephone directory or another public list. The qualification process is intended to determine which customers are most likely to purchase the product or service.
Charitable organizations, alumni associations, and political parties often use telemarketing to solicit donations. Marketing research companies use telemarketing techniques to survey the prospective or past customers of a client’s business in order to assess market acceptance of or satisfaction with a particular product, service, brand, or company. Public opinion polls are conducted in a similar manner.
Telemarketing techniques are also applied to other forms of electronic marketing using e-mail or fax messages, in which case they are frequently considered spam.

I have to say you have a great response to this.
It is easy to see that you give this a great deal of study and I will cast my vote for your response as the best.
I would chime in that I much prefer the live calls over the automated calls

I hope you do understand that people are stressed out on their jobs and when they get home, especially if your clients are Americans, they are already tired and still have lots of chores to do. So when someone calls up anytime during those stressful or busy times, the last thing they need is a call from a telemarketer. People would curse you or scream at you as an initial reaction. A piece of advice, its already given that people are as rude as ever..and i bet you knew that even before you took the job that it is a PART of the job, so just don't take it personally. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Many will not take no for an answer. Some telemarketers that sell insurance for Bank of America call 4-5 times a day even after we tell them we are not interested. Unfortunately people are fed up with stuff like that and take it out on all telemarketers.

You can tell them to take you off their call list. When people tell me that I delete them. Also you can get on the no call list so no telemarketer can call you without paying a huge fine.Thank you for your input.

well,i dislike telemarketers(no offense to u)but i will tell them hang the call politely and warned them not to call no more.I nvr curse or yell at them because they only did it for living, its a job and duty of theirs.I have no grugde with the caller so i don't see the need to do so.Howveer,as u know why people usually hate telemarkets is mainly because they r just "ANyoying"..so if u take this job (upon ur consideration),,u should have aspected to get some sickening reaction from the receiver."take it,or leave it".Its up to u.cheers pal, once again, just my 2cents.

You have a rough job to start with. There are so many telemarketers that are out there and for a long time the phone would be ringing with their calls endlessly all day and evening. It becomes very intrusive to families to start with and I think that you are just in a bad spot, in general because you never know if you're the first person to call in the past month or the fifth person to call in the hour.

I think you should accept this things happen as part of your job. we all know that having a job there is the advantages and disadvantages. we cannot predict peoples attitude, every person is unique, you just think it is part of your job. always practice patience and when some customers do it to you, just don't take it personally.

I usually yell at telemarketers when I'm expecting a call. The phone rings and I'm thinking that it is a person I'm expecting the call from, but no...It's a telemarketer! That makes me so angry that I may cuss them out. It all depends on the circumstances.

It really isn't our fault. We take a chance and sometimes we lose.Thank you for your honesty though.I wish I could just say I'm sorry and get off the phone. And I usually deal with the cussing so I can say I'm sorry. Then I delete your name. But some poeple won't.They will call you back. That is what I don't get.

I was a telemarketer too. Made an awesome good salary at it. The reason that people yell, is that they get toooooooooooo many calls from telemarketers, and enough is enough sometimes. Some of them call too late and too early also. But dear, that is the job you have. You will get hung up, cursed at and yelled at. Good luck, stay strong.

That is why companies pay telemarketers to do the dirty jobs for them. It is a very stressful job as you have to deal with all sorts of people from all backgrounds. You need to have a nerve of steel and one should not take it personally otherwise it's a tough job as it is an emotionally stressful and mentally hard job to do. Kudos to all the telemarketers.

first point:
if you get paid well then it works which means keep on doing it.
second point:
people are mean not to you but because they are not open to your offer at that moment in time.
