Is there a better term when your dating someone than"girlfriend" or "boyfriend"?

My girlfriend and I are living together and love each other very much. We have both been through hell in past relationships. IT just seems very Highshoolish to say girlfriend or boy friend. The only other word that comes to mond is signoficant other?? I need a more descrptive word to explain our relationship??

My boyfriend and I came p with a special name for each other, something that's just unique for us. A couple of my friends did the same thing. After a while we just ended up calling each husband and wife even though we aren't married yet.
