Christmas Dinner Ideas

Hi! My family doesn't want the regular run of the mill Christmas Day Dinner (No Ham or Turkey).. I was wondering if anyone could give me ideas. My husband says "Chicken" but.. I don't want to do Chicken LOL.. I'd like to find something that we can make every year that we don't have on a regular basis. I understand their reasoning behind it because we just pigged out on Turkey and all the "fixins" less than a month ago for Thanksgiving. Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone else do something "different" for Christmas Day dinner?

As a born Scotsman, but living abroad, I'm having haggis and whisky ... This is a once-a-year opportunity, because no one else in my surroundings likes it ! Have a wee dram on me !!!

HAGGIS : take some meat, the longues, livver and kidneys of a sheep. Grind it all and mix with herbs and spices. Take the stomach of a sheep and fill it with the above mix. Boil everything in hot water and serve in slices. That's your haggis in short. "Wee" means "Little" in proper English, and a dram is a measure of whisky. Have one on me and Merry Christmas to you all !!!

An excellent chicken dish my mom makes a lot is called "Christmas Chicken". You can use the boneless, skinless chicken tender strips for really yummy. You need: 1 can of whole cranberries 1 bottle French Dressing 1 envelope of onion soup mix. Combine all and pour over chicken. Cook at 350 until done. If you need more double everything since most onion soup mix boxes come with two envelopes. This is a GREAT recipe becuase you can have everything you need waiting in the cupboards and whip up in a moment for unexpected company. It looks festive, tastes great (sort of sweet and sour)and has like 5 minutes prep time just dumping everything in a mixing bowl and throwing in the oven!! Angela

Wow! Thanks for the fabulous sounding recipe! We may have to try that sometime. My family (minus me) loves chicken, so I'm always looking for new ways to prepare it!

Incidentally, it works great for leftover slices of turkey too. :-) Just lay the slices out on the pan and cover with the sauce. Heat inthe oven enough to get it hot (it's already COOKED) and voila! Leftovers you can actually stand to eat! :-D

When I was growing up, my parents used to go on Christmas Eve and buy tons of Chinese takeout and we wouldn't touch the food until Christmas Day. Then we would start digging into all of those little white cartons for Christmas Dinner. We always cooked a big traditional dinner for Thanksgiving and found this more fun. Another suggestion for cooking something different: my mother in law gets those pork tenderloins from the meat section and marinates them then cooks them on the grill and it is always yummy (and pretty easy too!). She doesn't do that for Christmas, it's just a really good dinner that she cooks. Here's one other nutty idea.... why don't you make it your Christmas tradition to do a huge breakfast foods meal? That's usually a fun dinner idea to shake things up and keep it interesting. Whatever you decide, Happy Holidays!

The Pork Tenderloin does sound good. So many great ideas! I've heard of people doing Breakfast foods.. I think the kids would really enjoy that one. Thanks everyone for the wonderful ideas. Now I have something to throw out there to them. Happy Holidays to you too!

I was thinking that too would be a great idea. There use to be a Chinese restaurant near here open on Christmas Day. The only problem at my house would be Mom. She doesn't eat Chinese.

We have lasagna sometimes. It's nice because you can make it the day before then just bake it on Christmas day. That way you are not stuck in the kitchen all Christmas day.

How about Italian mixed with Mexican Foods. Specifically spaghetti with soft taco shells. It's easy to create spaghetti with meatballs and it has almost the same ingredients when creating a taco shells with Ground Beef, lettuce plus onions and tomatoes. This would be our menu this coming Christmas. Just dont forget to buy mozarella cheese for your taco to make it taste good:)

I'm tired of the traditional stuff too. This year we're going to do seafood gumbo, a beautiful garden salad, hot garlic bread and an array of desserts. No turkey or ham for us!

If you want a fowl, try cornish game hens. One bird for each person. I used to do that and it was good. Not a lot of left overs. If you'd like something super easy - get a beef roast, set it on foil, drown it in barbeque sauce, wrap it in the foil and put it in the crock pot on low for 7 or 8 hours. When done, put it on a plate or a low bowl and shred the meat with a fork. Put them on buns and have barbeque sandwiches with ranch beans, potato salad and a dill pickle. But most of all - Have a Merry Christmas.

How about Italian? You cant go wrong with that. Most people like italian dishes, make a couple of dishes. You can lasagne and sauges and meatballs. And a big salad. MMM I am getting hungry.

What abt barbeque pork or maybe roast pork? First, you'll need to marinade the pork, preferably strips of pork belly, in light soya sauce, oyster saunce, dark soya sauce and sugar. Leave it to marinade for abt at least 4 hours (better overnight). Then pop it in the oven and roast for abt 25 mins at about 200 degrees, take it out, turn it around and sprinkle sugar all over the pork strips... put it back into the oven, roast for another 15 - 20 mins and take it out again. turn the pork strips over again, sprinkle with another layer of sugar and into the oven for abt 10 mins. You can also spread a little honey on it instead of sugar. It should be glazed sugary black.... slice the strips and ready to serve.

We have our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve too... well, the dinner with all the family, that is. Then, Christmas Day I make another dinner at home for just the four of us. What used to happen was that my sister and brother-in-law were eating a full turkey dinner two days in a row because they had one with us on the 24th and then another with his family on the 25th. It's just too much for most people to eat that way. Leftovers are one thing but a full-on turkey dinner... whew! My sister and I decided to try something different last year and it worked so well that we're doing it again on Sunday. We are having rib steaks on the grill (and we live in Canada so it's not because we live somewhere that's warm year 'round LOL!), twice baked potatoes that are stuffed with broccoli and some other things (this is a new twist because we did just plain baked potatoes last time), caesar salad, dinner rolls, etc. We also serve a peppercorn gravy for dipping the steak which is really yummy. We even pared down dessert to a good vanilla ice cream with a touch of creme de menthe for the adults (really nice for digesting a meat-heavy meal) and sundae toppings for the kids. This is one of the best ideas we ever did for ourselves... there's no huge pile of pots and pans to wash after dinner (everything goes straight into the dishwasher), the potatoes can be prepared in the morning so they just have to be slipped in the oven before dinner and the dessert is "just enough," without leaving you feeling stuffed to the gills. Instead of spending all our time cooking and cleaning up, we get to sit around and talk, laugh, open presents and play games as a family -- thats really the best part. Happy Holidays to you! :)

Grilling sounds like a wonderful idea. It was mentioned earlier and It caught my attention. Mostly because my husband is the one who messes with the grill. If it's cooked on the stove, then it seems it's all left to me. I agree with you. I'd like to not be in the kitchen all day Christmas Day. That's just not how I want to spend Christmas LOL Happy Holidays to you too! Enjoy yourself!

I would say Pizza is your best shot. Any chance that there is a pizza shop that could come up with a Christmas pizza?

This year we're doing something different. I told my kids that I'm tired, I'm busy, and I just don't want to cook. We usually have our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve together. So I suggested that this year we just have finger foods...a veggie tray with dip, maybe fondue, desserts, and maybe some meat and cheese. I just want to go simple this year. I'm too tired to make all the fixings like I usually do, and everyone is a little too hyper to sit down to a regular meal anyway. We'll see how it works this year.
