probably all her life but I think that she was recognised around 1990

It wasn't around 90. She came out with "what's the 411" in 1992. That was her first album. But she had been doing stuff underground prior to that. She was a backup singer for Father Mc and other local Uptown Records acts. But then Diddy took her under his wing and started working on "what's the 411" with her.
