Aborting a fetus you discovered might have a disability?

I was in an Autism forum not that long ago, when I saw a link to a truly shocking news article. Doctors in Europe are trying to discover the signs of autism early in the womb, so they can abort the fetuses.
Here is an article with regard to disabilities in general:
http://www.aapd-dc.org/News/disability/abortdebate.html
" Pregnancies increasingly are being terminated when fetuses are prenatally diagnosed with disabilities.
Each year in America fewer and fewer disabled infants are born. The reason is eugenic abortion. Doctors and their patients use prenatal technology to screen unborn children for disabilities, then they use that information to abort a high percentage of them. Without much scrutiny or debate, a eugenics designed to weed out the disabled has become commonplace."
As this article points out further on, these babies might not even have the disability. They might just be carriers. Meaning, they are aborted really for no reason at all. Most of us are carriers for one thing or another, and yet we're here, living full lives.
Do you think this is fair? Do you think this is right? Why are we on such a quest to give birth to perfect children? There are children with disabilities who grow up to be wonderful, productive adults.
This just doesn't seem right.

Just because children have disabilities, does not make them an uncontributing member of society. I teach an autistic child who is a complete genius. He understands everything on a much deeper level than my other students. He can be difficult sometimes, because he has a short temper when it comes to some things, but he's blessed many people's lives.

I know it's not funny, but I had to chuckle at the "short temper" part. I wish that part of my son would disappear. LOL They're definitely not dumb kids- certainly not any less smart than any neuro-typical kid, that's for sure. My son picked up this computer at lightning speed- much faster than his older sister has.

I think it would be nice to find a cure.. unfortunately, things like Autism, there really is no way of knowing whether or not a child will develop it. At least not yet..

I agree with you. I don't agree with abortion in general, but it seems like they are pushing it waaay too far. None of the arguements for abortion suport this selective killing.
I went to school with a girl who had been diagnosted with autism while in the womb, the doctors advised her parents to abort the child. They kept her, and she was born perfectly normal, in fact she was the smartest person in my class and ranked "genius" on the PSATs. Parents should really be informed that these tests are dangerous to the baby, and often inacurrent. It doesn't seem right to me either.

I do not think it is right and I've been in that position before. My fourth child was born without kidneys and no hope of survival. This is a condition known as Potter's Syndrome and can be detected by 16 to 20 weeks in utero. We would have had the option to abort due to the fact of the 0 survival rate. I'm glad we didn't know this fact until the day before my little fellow was born. He only lived for 22 hours but I was also able to enjoy him for that entire pregnancy.
It's a tough decision but in our case I know both my husband and I would still make the same decision. And if it were for any disability, I would only have one of my six children if I had ever aborted. Forget it. I can't imagine a world without any of them.

I am so sorry about your son. But it's wonderful that he made such an impact on your life in just 22 hours (and those previous 9 months, of course) of time. thanks for responding. :)

I rode the bus with two twins who were downs syndrome. Neither of them were retarded. One (an albino along with trisomy 21) went on to college. While that's a rare case, the down syndrome issue is the greatest percentage of children who are aborted.
Disabilities have litte bearing on one's whole of ability. This eugenics phase is all about conformity, and eliminating diversity within the population.

I do not believe in abortion due to disability. I have a discussion topic up regarding down syndrome and chorionic villi sampling as a diagnostic tool for downs. I am prolife.

This is 100% wrong, the only reasons for abortions should be the health of the mother, rape, or incest. Otherwise it's not the mother's role to play god. You have to realize any time you decide to have a child they may have a disability, but in the end you will love them no matter what. They are your child. I could never look at my wife again knowing she killed her child out of convenience and I know she would never do that.

Good for you! Are you claiming you should be the poster child for women that are impregnated by rapist? My mother was a product of rape, dogs were raised and treated better than her. My Grandmother was a good woman, but the fact my mother was the offspring of her rapist was always there. I even noticed something was diffrent with the way she treated my mother when I was a young girl. Does this mean all women who have been raped should abort? NO!!! It means it's each womans choice and what YOU decided doesn't mean a hill of beans to anyone else. YOU walk in your shoes, and I will walk in mine.

How is it a sin, when it's not mentioned in the Bible? Abortion has existed as long as humans have, yet God doesn't mention it?

Last time I checked, Thou shalt not kill was still one of the TEN commandments! A "fetus" is a human and abortion is killing a live being!

In the United States there are tests that they offer to the pregnant mother during her first trimester. It tests for different disabilites. This test has a hugh false positive rate. I have turned this test down all 3 times. We have decided as a couple that it the results would not matter to us either way. We would not abort the baby on the chance that it may have a disability.

I think it's the parents choice. They are the ones that will raise the child, not you nor I. Personally I can't say what I would do if presented with this choice. I know how hard it is for me with two children that are severe asthmatics, emotionally, physically as well as financially. I know children that are a disabled are not easy to care for. I use to worry if I should have a child like that, who would take care of them when I die? What kind of life could they have. Again, I don't know what I would do if faced with such an option.

I don't put too much value on the love of a parent who only loves their child if they are not disabled. "mom, would u have aborted me too if their was something wrong with me?" its heartbreaking

Children that MAY grow into an addiction or a life of crime is hardly the same as a child who will never be able to care for themself. The comparison is pointless.

I am strong against abortion in every circumstances, even in the case of a disabled foetus. The reason behind my decision is that every human being has a right to live. I am strong against any type of violence, capital punishment, killing including abortion. Who are we to decide who shall live and who shall not?
I do believe that persons with special needs do have dignity of a human being, even though they might need special help to lead their own life. Or in the case of autistic persons they need to be closely supervised by others.

I dont know wat to say as i have known people who have children with disability but they are so possive about their children. I think the whole idea of aborting a baby with disability is sick as you are killing a human being. Would one throw away their children if they developed some kind of disability after being born? I am sure no so why kill them when they are in the womb. This should be banned and serious action must be taken against this.

to me it is unthinkable.a child may not be "normal" but is here for a reason.i understand that raising a child with a disability is extremely difficult and effects all aspects of one's life, and there may be people that truely could not handle such a challenge, but there are adoptive parents that could provide the love and needs of the child if a birth parent feels they are unable to do it. i have known so many wonderful people with all types of disabilities who have made an amazingly positive impact on others.

I believe in disabilities, I don't believe in abortion. Everyone deserves a chance to live and contribute what their life has to give to the world. They should use the term "doctor" very loosely.

I agree with you there. I'm getting sick of these doctors who are contributing to whatever the definition of the perfect human is. It reminds me of back in the days of Hitler, when they were killing off anybody who wasn't perfect- people with the wrong skin color, wrong hair or eye color.

As a parent of a child with disabilities, I have some major issues with this. I was told at 26 weeks pregnant that my son was going to most likely be "still born". If he wasn't, he would live a very short meaningless life is what the doctor quoted. I was told, not in so many words, that although abortion of this term was unable to be done in most areas that if I truly wanted it, the doctors could find a place that would provide the "service" legally. I looked at the doctors standing around and said "I'll take my chances, that is NOT an option." Several of them looked at me like I was a crazy cruel person. Well, I was treated like a psycho because I was trying to carry a "no longer viable" pregnancy to term like a normal person. My husband and I proceeded to name our son and continue visits as though all was well. At 36 weeks we had our son via emergency c-section. He is now 9 months old and has overall good health, although he is blind and has major brain anomolies and isn't "normal" as most say, he is the sweetest littl baby we've ever had. We are now pregnant, with our fourth child and are living a happy life. I am not saying that a child with disabilities is not challenging or even depressing at times, afterall, they bring tons of specialists and more frequent doctor visits etc, but I don't think my life would be fulfilled without him and to think that several doctors wanted me to terminate him... God does what he does for a reason. If he had not wanted me to have a child he wouldn't have allowed it!
I am very biased on the subject, I'll admit that in a heartbeat. However, all people are different. God bless the parents who keep their children and raise them. I know times can be trying but all is done for a reason.
