Has Christmas lost its true meaning?

With all the hype that is created about Christmas and the many offers and ads that we see on telly I feel Christmas has been highly commercialised and has lost its true meaning. I asked a little boy at school the other day what Christmas meant to him and all he had to say was that Christmas was a day of receiving big presents, seeing Santa Claus and eating turkey. Well theres a lot to Christmas then that, but sad to say the generation of today has forgotten all of it:(

for some it may have lost its meaning but you just have to make christmas how you want it, don't get dragged into the commercialism of it. We enjoy christmas the way we want to with the whole family around for a nice big christmas meal, presents aren't important so we just get each other silly little fun presents. Also theres the religious bit but i don't do that as it seems a bit hipercritical to suddenly become a devout christian at christmas

I guess it depends on how you feel. For me Christmas is about honoring the birth of Jesus. I do think that a lot of people over comercialize it and its sad becsue it is a Christian holiday. I think if you hold the truth of the day the point of Christmas wont be forgotton.

I definatelly feel that Christmas has become far to commercialised. 8 years ago, when I was 16, I told my parents I did not want a single christmas present, I was just going to enjoy the true meaning of Christmas - for me maybe in a small part religion, but the main part being a time when I can enjoy being with my familly, taking the time to really listen to them, meet my cousins a play with them etc.
Since then I've said the same thing every year, NO presents, and my friend think I'm weird for it. But I feel that as long as Christmas is so much about presents, I don't want a single one.
Idealy I think it would be great if it could be kept to giving one or a few small presents that you knew that the person really wanted and needed. But at the moment I feel that it's gone completely over the top and I prefer keeping it in my own way instead.
Merry Christmas to you all - I hope you really enjoy the tru meaning of Christmas this year! :)

Hi Wish you too and all the rest on mylot a very Happy christmas !!! Hats of to you dear for forfeiting your presents every year. It does take a lot of zest to say that. But ,may I suggest to you that instead of saying no to presents you could use that money in helping someone less fortunate to smile on Christmas day.

Altogether, CHRISTMAS IS BULL**** and is a VERY HYPOCRITICAL HOLIDAY. I'll tell you why I say this.
1. First of all I used to love Christmas to the core. Nobody could tear me away from Christmas before. But now I am all grown up and have enough sense to know that Christmas is garbage
One of the reasons why I say that Christmas is garbage and is a hypocritical holiday is because first of all, if the true meaning of Christmas is supposed to be all about Love, Joy, Peace, and celebrating Jesus, THEN WHY IN THE WORLD CAN'T I CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS IS JUNE? or May?
HYPOCRITE. You see what I mean? Why in the world can't I sing," Joy to the World the Lord is come let earth receive her king. Why can't I sing Joy to the World in June IF Christmas is all about Love and Joy and Peace? With all the problems you see going on in the world with the Middle East and all the killings and stuff, DON'T WE NEED SOME JOY TO THE WORLD IN JUNE? So why can't we use some Joy to the World in June? So what, we can only celebrate Love, and Joy and Peace and Jesus in December? Very hypocritical holiday and HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH JESUS EITHER.
2. That brings me to the second reason why I say Christmas is garbage is because CHRISTMAS HAS NOTHING AND I'LL SAY THIS AGAIN, CHRISTMAS HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH JESUS WHATSOEVER. Because the bible is plainly against Christmas. It tells you in the bible that we should not adorn the tree. It is tradition, it is against god and therefore it is sin.
READ IT: In Jeremiah 10 it clearly states that we should not learn the ways of the heathen which involved them cutting a tree and then decorating it with ornaments . When we do this we are clearly disobeying Gods word.
Some people don't care about disobeying God's word but I do because I know he is real. And before we go any further, NO I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN AND I DO NOT GO TO CHURCH BUT I BELIEVE and I have proven that he is real for myself. NOT NO CHURCH.
3. Third reason why Christmas is Bull**** is because Jesus WAS NOT AND I SAY AGAIN JESUS WAS NOT BORN IN THE WINTER TIME AT ALL. Where these pagans got the idea that Jesus was born in the bitter cold is beyond me.
On the contrary, Jesus was born in the the summer time. And where in the world did these pagans get the idea that there were 3 wise men. The bible tells us that there were wise men. IT DOES NOT TELL US HOW MANY WISE MEN THERE WERE. It just said wise men.
Christmas is so Bull**** that if I hear the word again, I feel like I will explode
4. Fourth reason why Christmas is bull**** is because Christmas is nothing more than a greedy salesman taking ALL OF YOUR MONEY.
5. Fifth reason why Christmas is bull**** is because people are only nice to you and caring to you at that time in December, BUT WAIT until Feburary comes, EVERYBODY GOES BACK TO THEIR NORMAL SELF OF BEING A BI***.
6. Sixth reason why Christmas is Bull**** is because so many people at this time kill themselves because they have no one to be with and nobody to care for them at Christmas time. You know, now that I think of it, I hate christmas now that I think about it
And author, you are correct,
CHRISTMAS HAS LOST ITS MEANING BECAUSE CHRISTMAS NEVER HAD ONE!

You're one of very few people who expresses the same sentiment I do. Jeremiah 10 convinced me fully of something I already knew but I'm always amazed at how little people really care about that. It doesn't seem to matter that it clearly describes an adorned tree, standing upright, etc and we're admonished to not do that. They continue to claim the day is "for Christ" which simply isn't true. So many say it's okay and possible to take something of pagan origin and make it good by making it "for Christ" but I've yet to see one instance of that in scripture. I also ask "Why don't you celebrate His birthday in June or April or October?" but rarely get much of an answer. As for the date of His birth, I don't believe it was summer time but I know it wasn't December. I'm inclined to believe it was in the Autumn during Feast of Tabernacles.
Out of curiosity, you say you aren't a christian but you believe Jesus is real. Can you be more specific about that? What I mean is, you believe He existed? You believe He was a propet? You believe He wandered around telling good news or what? I'm trying to see what your stance on Him is.
Thanks so much!

I agree that it has become very commercialized. But just don't let it change you. I work at trying to show my kids that its bigger than that. We try to help out other people more at this time of year. My kids know that we've given food to a family that needed it. My middle son's class at school "adopted" a child for Christmas and raised money to buy him clothes, and presents. My oldest son gave $60. of his own money to help a child that his class adopted. One is in high school and the other is in elementary. Its a matter of what you show them is important.

I am happy to learn that. Its nice to know that in a world engulfed with selfish motives there do exist a handful who would walk the extra mile to carve a smile on the faces of those less fortunate. I am glad that your family has helped so many around you. Keep up the good work. Of course the commercialization has not changed me, it only does get to my nerves.

Personally, I really detest the commercialism of the holiday but I also dislike the holiday itself. I'm one of those who takes the pagan origins of it seriously and believes that Christians have no business celebrating it. That's an unpopular view but it's my view.
To answer your question, though...the true meaning of Christmas isn't goodness and light and it's still not goodness and light so no, it hasn't lost its true meaning. It's still pagan and all about greed.

Yule was a pagan holiday hijacked by Christians. I was meant to celebrate the fact that people had survived the winter. I certainly hope it has lost it's meaning, in this day and age people shouldn't be dying from the cold. ;]

Slowly over the years it has become more of a shopping festival, rather than a pious celebration. This is happening to other celebrations like easter, id, Birthday.Nothing is complete without going to the superstores and shopping malls. This maybe because of families becoming nuclear and life becoming fast....

Yes you are right. Not only christmas ,traditional fastivals of many religions has become commercial festivals as business sector is trying to capture what ever chance they got.Additional to these lovers day, valentines day, fathers day, mothers day ,etc . are also some of commercial festivals. Is these all days required to express a feeling which will be always with you?

Christmas has just become to commercial. It is all about getting gifts and spending money and fighting over the latest toys and electronics. People should really step back and enjoy the true meaning of christmas.
