Well you could start with capital as low as Rs.5000. It would not be easy to tell you which type of Mutual Fund (MF) you should to invest in. I would have to profile you before I could suggest asset allocation. Approach a qaulifed financial advisor. Some of the important things that you have to consider for growth of wealth irrespective of the asset class are (even if you approach an advisor) (1) The amount of capital you want to inevest, and the amount that you are (i) willing to risk losing (ii) you can afford to lose (2) Set achievable, reachable and practical goals, don't be greedy. (3) A time line-this is generally 3 years or more. I suggest a time line of 5 to 7 years for real capital appreciation to most of my clients. (4) Revisit your investment plan over a reasonable period of time - say once half yearly or annually. (5) Don't panic, some of the downward blips are only temporary. (6) Set an exit target and stick to it, on both ends - a stop loss or an exit otption once you have reaced your goals. Then take a postion once again if you feel that the postion is worth further exposure. (7) Spread you capital across as many assets and themes as you can, don't inevst all your mnoney in one asset class or theme. (8)Remember, mutual fund invstments (as are most investment otpions except some of the nationalized banks and governemnt paper) are subject to market risks.
