Weird problem while sleeping

When I go to sleep, especially very late, I suddenly regain conciousness within a few minutes. However, I do not have any control over my physical body. I try to move my arms, legs and head during this phase, but with no success. After several pain-staking seconds, I slowly regain control over my body and suddenly wake up with a jitter. This is not a dream or isolated incident, since this has happened to me on several ocassions over the past year or so. I have gotten used to this and even concious of what is happening during this phase. So, I decided not to make any efforts to move and remain motionless during this phase, but it totally freak me out since the phase is never-ending untill I make a concious effort to come out of it.
There are 3 explantions that I can think of.
(1. biological) The body gets into a state of deep sleep and the brain wakes up. (2.psychological) The body (includind the brain) is asleep and the soul/mind wakes up. (3.philosophial) My soul/state of being tries to transcend into another dimesion.
I am really confused and would really appreciate any genuine/logical/medical explanations.

It's really comforting to know that I am not alone. By the way, have you seen the movie waking life. It revolves around a simialr theme.
