Surname problems

I have what most people think is an unusual surname so it has caused us heaps of problems . Years ago i had a phone call to tell me that our car was going to be repossessed,i told them that i was ahead in my payments but they would not listen to me and kept insisting i was way behind in my payments. I found all my receipts and read the dates and amounts i had made payments after a lot of arguing she finally asked if the car was at and gave an address that i didn't know i told her that was not my address and i had never lived anywhere near there and gave her my address,i was told to hold and she came back and apologised and said she had the wrong person .I was told that as it was an unusual name she pulled out the file my husbands initial is A so of course it was the first in the file so she just presumed that it was us . I have had the wrong medication given me. We have had so many similar experiences that now i always double check everything. When we had our children i made sure that they had names that started way down the alphabet my son is W my daughter is S hoping that would cause them less problems. Have you had experiences like this because of your name

I shouldn't laugh here but cannot help it when you say that if you had the time over you would change the names. When our son was born we were determined not to name him after any relatives or the same as any of our friends who had children. He also had different initials to both his father and I and all went well for 10 years till younger brother names his firstborn. Different name, but yes same initials as our son. They lived in a different town and state so that was fine till she started just putting down her initials on things and never paying the bill. GRRR

Yes ! Unfortunately my Surname also begins with 'A' because of which I used to face the problem as a student in college. I was always in first few in the college to be called in for Viva Voce examination. Naturally after asking few questions the Professors used to get bored and then they would repeat the questions to other students. This situation becomes advantagious for the students whose surnames would start with the letters occupying later in the sequence of alphabet. We since were the openers we were always put to loss for two reasons, one we never used to have any guesses what would be asked in the exam next thing is the Professors used to be very fresh in the beginning to take us to the task, in case if we committed some mistake !

Surname - Surname
How awful for you rosebug and just as well that you had all the receipts handy so you could prove that your payments were not in arrears. It is also appalling that they would give out such classified information to someone when they hadn't first confirmed they were talking to the right person. We too have a very unusual surname and in fact if anyone who knows it hears the surname, they immediately assume that the person must be related to us. There are only 12 of us with the same surname in Australia at this time and 10 of us are related. :) It can be annoying but understandable when people cannot pronounce it correctly but more frustrating when we have to repeatedly tell the same person how to pronounce our surname. In fact when our son started school, he was most indignant that not only couldn't the teachers and other kids say his name but also they couldn't spell it either. LOL

My last name is not unusual, its actually quite common. The problem for me is that there are 3 other people who live in the same area who have the exact same first and last name and the same middle initial. When I first got married and moved to this area, I had to provide copies of my old drivers licence, social security card, and my marriage licence, just to be able to rent movies. One of the people with the same name had run up a bunch of bills and written bad checks and stuff, and they wouldnt believe that I was not her until I showed them a copy of my marriage licence, proving I'd just gotten that last name a month before!

In the street next to mine there are 3 person with exactly the same firstname and lastname like me, and another one with a different firstname. One of them even studies in my university...and it always brings me a lot of problems. Specially with the postman because the street is very long and he just doesn't want to make any efforts and he gives all the mail to one of us even when the adress is correctly written, and even when the firstname is totally different!!!! and we have to deliver it by ourselves (which is good because now we all know each other :) ). I discovered that when I was 15 and I got a mail that said I had to pay charges for my appartment...

Boy Rosebug, I can really relate to this post, lol! My ex husbands last name was a common last name, about 3 pages in our phone book are devoted just to that same last name. At my pharmacy there are 23 people in their computer with the same first name, middle initial, and last name as mine. At my gynecologist, there are 21 females with the same first, middle and last name as mine. One day I got an answering machine message from some Dr's office about my 'upcoming surgery on Monday.' EEEEEkkkkkkk! What???? I called their office and they actually argued with me about it. I told them they left a message on my machine, and that they had the wrong person. They read back my social security number, and birthdate, and I said yea, that was mine alright, but I haven't been to see this Dr, and I am certainly NOT scheduled for surgery. I ended up telling them that if they tried to bill my insurance company for somebody else's surgery they were going to have one heck of a big problem. What part of 'it's not me' don't you get here, lol?! There was numerous times when I would get other peoples prescriptions (one error was a heart medication that probably would have caused massive problems had I not read the bottle before going out of the store!) After that, I started giving them my birthdate and home address, and phone # just to verify stuff. It was a royal pain in the bee-hind!! Now that we're divorced, I went back to my maiden name, there are no others in America with that surname, and if there are, they are direct relatives. You're right when you said it causes heaps of problems!!

Just for curiosity reasons, what is your last name? =S You don't have to answer if you don't want to. But I haven't had problems like that, but I have had a bunch of racial comments made to me about people who have never seen me before. My name is not very common for my race, and it sometimes gives me problems.

Here in the US we are so lawsuit happy , and privacy conscious, that before they gave you any info, or asked you any questions they would have asked you for the last four digits of your social security number and your mother's maiden name or some such. It does not sound like a laughing matter, and now you know the other person's personal financial situation, whether you wanted to or not. That is really too bad.

This happened to us about 25 years ago so they didn't have as much security and all the privacy laws back then

My mother has had somebody with the exact same name giving companies my mother's phone number when they applied for credit. So when this person defaults on the bills my mother starts getting calls about it. My mother has had to clean up her credit record a half-dozen times over the years. Obviously the person in question knew they were doing it. My mother finally changed her number to an unlisted. She still has to clean up her credit rating occasionally, but at least she no longer gets phone calls from creditors.
