Why is Wal*Mart taking over the US?

Don't get me wrong, wally world is a place where you can get almost anything. Doesn't it seem that they are monopolizing the retail industry and taking out all the mom and pop shops across the US? And the idiots they hire, come on, I know there are better employees out there. Pay them better and get some descent help. I am sick and tired of standing in line for an hour just to pay for a dollar item. Yes, I'm ranting, but I am curious if it just where I live or do other people experience the same thing where they live?
