Hi, I would advise that you keep reading and learning from books. At the same time, after you read a trick in a book, try and do it too! After all your hand will teach you more than any book. You should also start with a HB (hard/black) pencil and lots many papers for sketching. For start, used papers (one side) will also do. Try and see how the pencil renders with different angles and pressures and see how you can use that in your drawings. Experiment with sharpened and blunt pencil tips to get various effects. Paper texture also plays an important role, but that you may keep aside for now. Hope this helps you start with your pencil shading.

Yes, HB pencil is good enough. There are pencils with variations in the hardness and blackness. For basics and learning purpose HB is good. You can use different pencils like 2B, 3B, 4B etc for various effects later. Like if you are shading a night scene, it will take ages to render the dark sky with a normal and sharpened HB pencil! Whereas, if you use a 6B for that dark sky, you will get the same effect very quick and also the paper will be intact as your pencil strokes will be much lesser and the 6B pencil's hardness is almost zero!

The Shading Do-Nots: Do not shade with the side of your pencil. Do not smear the drawing with your finger or a tissue. Do not start out too dark - you can always get darker as you work. Do not use mechanical pencils. (Sorry- won't work!) The Do's: Do make a flat edge on the tip of your pencil lead by "coloring" a sharpened tip on a piece of scrap paper. Do shade in one direction only... then shad the opposite direction on top. Do shade from light layers to dark to avoid uneven transitions.

I'm glad you asked. I would be lost without my kneaded gum eraser. When a drawing gets too gray, you can put the highlights back in with this eraser. I prefer softer pencils. I have some that are 100% graphite (no wood) and they work great. All my pencils are in the B range. Try a softer pencil. No one so far has mentioned paper and that is as important as the pencil. I like some tooth to my paper to grab the graphite. But too much and you have to fight with it. I fix all my drawings with hair spray or special sealer from the art store so they won't smear. The number one key to pencil shading is patience. Take frequent breaks if your concentration starts to wane. Always keep a clean piece of paper under your arm so you don't smear the pencil with your arm or fingers. I hope all this helps. Try drawing with charcoal sticks as well.

You can use a piece of eraser or plain paper and rub softly on your pencil work, That is picture of rocks, Clouds, cheeks, etc. You can do the same in pastel work too.For soft lines,[Trees etc] you can use the back side of the painting brush. You can see my logo.It isthe work of wax crayons in cloth.

Hi :) Hope your pencil shading lessons are going well! I just thought of something, when you practice well and do some nice assignment, how about posting it here on mylot to show others ;) Even I'll get to see your drawings, it may inspire me also to try my hands at sketching once again. I think this is a good idea to showcase your work and earn without anyone buying it ;) All the best!

I like drawing too.A efficace method is the next one:if you want to make a shadow, just draw a thicker line, and after doing this rub it with your finger,it will spread around.Once, because i hadn't no charcoal or a Hb pencil really dark,i used a dermatographic crayon. And my drawing ended pretty well.I am interested in new methods of drawing,so if you find out more, please let me know too.
