hi,its not only in the case of christmas...the major events/occassions are becoming more social dy by day...the sanctity is reducing ....its a more to exhibit one's richness..power...than participating in those occassions...

Christmas has never really been just a religious event. It was started by Pagans in celebrating winter solstice (Dec 21-27), thus where the christmas tree came from. Then later when Christians wanted to celebrate their god, they took the Birthday of the Pagan Sun God, Dec. 25. Then as it worked it's way down through history the pagan and the Christian celebrations were intertwined together. So it's never really been just a religious holiday, but a Winter celebration and gathering with Jesus mixed in.

I agree that Christmas is a major commercial boom for all the goods manufactures. But it does have a great social gathering advantage. People in this busy society have very less time to be together. Alteast Christmas gets them together.
