when and how was Santa Claus created?

I mean in which book or story Santa Claus is firstly mentioned? Why do people creat Santa Claus?

may I undersatnd your response in this way. cos, people do not believe the exsitence of the god . so they created Santa to replace the position of the god.

I think it was from Clement Clarke Moore the poem the night before christmas. I think I seen a show about this and it was his poem that really put a face and a deed with Santa Claus. But I think before that, the Germans had a character that was close to it.
Santa Clause came to be, because the whole x-mas holiday never began with the celebration of Jesus's birth. It began as a Winter Solice, that over the years incorparated other traditions from other celebrations. Then the Christains felt they needed a holiday to celebrate their lord, so they took the birthday of the pagan sun god's, Dec.25. So that's how x-mas has Santa Claus along with it.
