It's important because we guides us to our destination.

I know one person woh just can not travel without a map. Once we were traveling by train with him and I saw he had marked the whole routwe of train on the map and at every stop he used to make across signifying that we just crossed that station. It was really funny as I thought if he felt the train might lose its way. Not to tell you it was a military train destined to go from one point to another exclusively for taking troops and materials to the said destination. I met him after 10 years and his son says that his father has a room full of maps, its really funny.

Maps become redundant only when people cease to travel, students cease to study geography,

I forgot about North star, tey give you direction it's installed in your Car but you better have a new car1 some people can't affort that. so people still need maps if there taking a trip. I would say there still important, even if you get them
on the computer.

My husband is a route sales so he uses maps a lot. Actually I use maps quite a bit too. If I am looking for a particular business they can come in quite handy. With GPS tracking they probably won't be used as much but right now many people can't afford the GPS tracking.

well, in my opinion, maps are there to stay even now!
for me, in my place, GPS and stuff is not in use yet. so if i am going out to a new place, a look at the map for a few minutes, and i wont lose my way!! in addition, maps give me the option to chose a better or shorter route, if needed.
but it is true, after the advent of new technologies like GPS, maps for the purpose of navigation may be on their way out. i still have to experience GPS to comment on it.
still, there are a lot more uses for maps as such.
political maps can tell us where a state or country starts and ends, and when you are in a border town, which side of the border you are in!! lol
there are other maps that describe the height of the land, the soil type, rivers flowing, types of minerals under the ground, fault lines for earthquake monitoring, locations of dormant volcanoes....
there can be isoline maps monitoring temperatures, rainfall etc.
so, although maps may be easing out of use from the common man's life, they can still be useful for the army, municipalities, tax assessors, geologists etc.
and now with more and more technology coming in, we have started mapping other stuff than just mother earth!! what about brain mapping, genetic mapping etc.!! lol

maps are still very important you cannot completely depend on technology as technology can can give up at any moment without prior notice lol but you can always rely on the maps they cannot go down on battery or any other technical glitches
