Some people claim that these are publicity stunuts to boost the careers of U2 for example. But I put this to them: U2 are MEGA stars they dont need additional publicity already. And lets presume they did indeed use the plight of the underprivileged to gain publicity. The underprivileged still benefit in the end! So why complain??

I think that U2 and Bob Geldof USE the plight of these people to boost their careers. They prey on the feelings of guilt in the public to pressure them into giving money to charity by buying their products (most of whose profits will go directly to the artists, only a small percentage to the charity). When it comes to charity concerts, they will perform for free, or for less than usual, but they're not giving anything other than their time, and what they're getting in return is a sort of saintly image in the public eye. If they put their hands in their pockets and actually gave some money rather than bullying people who can ill afford it into giving, then they could make a big dent in world poverty, without ever feeling the effects of that financial loss themselves. Bono and Geldof are profiteering on the back of the third world, and I think that's reprehensible.
